International Student Applying to St Andrews

Hello,

My daughter is an international student. She applied to five universities via UCAS, and has four offers and is still waiting to hear from the fifth university.

Unfortunately she hasn't had the opportunity to visit the schools, and now that she has been hearing hearing more about the student satisfaction at St. Andrews, she is wishing she had applied there.

I am wondering if it is still possible for her as an international student to apply directly to St. Andrews?

Many thanks.

The poster above mentions UCAS Extra, which is halfway true - your daughter can withdraw from all her offers and becomes eligible to apply to one more university via UCAS Extra. However, before you do this your daughter needs to check on the UCAS website whether if the course she wants to do at St Andrews is currently accepting applications. They are a very popular university so it's very likely that they will not be on UCAS Extra! So very important to check before your daughter withdraws from any offers she has received.

OK, great, thank you for that information.

So if she is interested in keeping any of her offers, she can't apply to an additional university in this cycle? Sorry for the questions, we are not familiar with the system.

That is correct. It would be a very big risk applying to St Andrews right now. She could very well lose her offers and end up with nothing.

I have been in touch with a number of universities admissions teams to find out what courses are available and still open for UCAS Extra. St. Andrews is one of them. They have courses that are still open and some that are closed. It is best to call them. BUT all universities will tell you that applying to them via UCAS Extra does not guarantee a place so indeed giving up offers or withdrawing options before hearing back from all 5 universities comes with a big risk. The UCAS Extra rules say universities will get back to you within 21 days of your new application and if they don't you have the right to submit a new application to another university. I am navigating 2 rejections and awaiting news from 3 more. We made a decision to wait for the outcome of the 3 before thinking about next steps. Even if that means waiting until the May deadline.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and situation.

Waiting until all the replies are in does seem like the best option. Wishing you the best on your application journey!
