Taking a year out of uni to do access course + a-level maths to switch degree

Im currently in my first year of a psychology degree and I'm really not enjoying it. I always wanted to study something like physics/engineering but I never did the right a levels (I did English lit, philosophy and fine art ABB) and I ended up applying for psychology because I felt like it was the closest I could get.

I'm considering temporarily withdrawing for 12 months and in that time I will hopefully do an access to HE diploma online and privately study a level maths and take the exams wherever is closest to me. after completing these i'll see if I can request to switch courses at the uni I'm already at as I really love my university I just don't like my course.

Does this seem smart/doable? I've just realised life is too short for me to cary on its this degree if I have absolutely no passion for it.

Hi, I’m starting biomedical science this year so I haven’t started uni yet, but I was in a similar mindset when deciding what to apply for. Honestly it sounds like a pretty sensible idea to me. If you already know you’re not enjoying psychology and you’ve always been more interested in physics or engineering, taking a year to get the right maths qualification seems like a good way to move yourself in that direction. A year might feel like a lot now but in the long run it’s not much if it means you end up doing something you actually enjoy. I’d probably just speak to your uni as well before withdrawing because sometimes they can advise on switching courses or the best way to do it.

Hi, I am sorry you are not enjoying your current degree, and you can certainly change it for something else. I am not sure what is the best path for that though, is there a career advisor or uni admission person you can ask? I wish you all the best whatever you decide to do
