Finance or business management

Hi guys,
I have a question because I am going to be applying next year I do a BTEC and a level maths
So I want to do Business management at Durham and I meet the requirements but, my parents are telling me to pick me to pick finance and I don't meet the requirements which requires a 7 in maths I have a 5 but I do a level maths privately is that okay?

Also what degree between these two will get me a job more easily after the undergrad with business sector or fiance sector?

It’s best to follow your interests and courses that align with your abilities. It makes no sense to pursue a finance degree with a relatively low grade in Maths.

I’d suggest that you apply to business management at Durham and then a combination of finance and business management across other unis.

Hey @Curries_07,

If you don't meet the standard requirements for an undergraduate course (e.g. Grade 7 in GCSE Maths), it's unfortunately very unlikely that you'll be made an offer.

As mentioned above, it would be best to apply to Business Management at Durham rather than Finance. If you're interested in applying to Finance, have a look at the entry requirements for Finance courses elsewhere as there should be some that accept a Grade 5. Alternatively, try to look for Business Management courses that include finance modules.

Hope this helps and best of luck with A-Level Maths,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Hiya @Curries_07 !!! Durham student rep here 👋

That’s actually a really sensible question, and the plan you’re thinking about (Business Management then a Finance master’s) is something quite a lot of students do.

1. Doing a Finance master’s after Business Management is definitely possible.
Many universities allow students to move into finance-related master’s degrees after a Business Management or Business & Management undergraduate degree, especially if you’ve taken modules like:

accounting

corporate finance

economics

data/analytics

So your undergraduate degree doesn’t have to be Finance in order to work in the finance sector later.

2. Your A-Level Maths will help a lot.
If you’re doing A-Level Maths privately, that can strengthen your academic profile and also prepare you for finance modules during your degree. For postgraduate courses, universities care much more about:

your degree classification (usually a 2:1 or First)

the modules you took

sometimes relevant experience

GCSE grades usually matter much less at master’s level.

3. Business Management vs Finance for jobs

Both degrees can lead to very similar careers. Business Management graduates regularly go into:

consulting

marketing

finance roles

management schemes

banking

entrepreneurship

What tends to matter more for employability is:

internships / placements

work experience

society involvement (e.g. finance or consulting societies)

networking and career events

So choosing a degree you’re more likely to do well in and enjoy is often the better strategy.

4. A possible pathway could look like this:

Undergraduate: Business Management

Take some finance/economics modules during the degree

Gain internships in finance or business

Then apply for a Finance, Management, or Business Analytics master’s

That’s a very common route into the finance sector. But remember not all routes are linear and look the same for everyone. I advise to keep your mind open, choose realistic options but ensure they excite and inspire you still.

So overall, if you currently meet the requirements for Business Management at Durham, that’s a strong option, which doesn’t close the door to finance later at all.

If you have any further questions please keep in touch! Best of luck with your decisions - Durham is a lovely university!
