Are people still waiting to hear from Durham University for Law 2026

Good morning, I'm actually asking this on behalf of my daughter, she's had all her offers apart from Durham and the stress is taking its toll, she has anxiety and autism and is approaching wanting to start her student finance applications soon as that opens later this month.
She's predicted to get the qualifying grades but didn't do well in her LNAT

Just wondering ndeting if anyone in same position so we can reassure her the best we can it's still a possibility
Thankyou

Loads of people are still waiting. Durham is one that takes years!! Just tell her to hold tight, but make sure she has a university she wants to go to if she gets rejected

Hiya !! Durham Student Representative here 👋

Firstly, it’s completely normal to still be waiting for Durham Law at this stage, so your daughter is definitely not alone - you should try and reassure her about this. Durham is known for releasing decisions quite late in the cycle, particularly for competitive courses like Law. Every year there are applicants who don’t hear until March or even April, so the fact that she hasn’t heard yet doesn’t mean anything negative about her application.

A couple of things that might reassure her:

1. Durham assesses applications holistically.

While the LNAT is considered, it’s not the only factor. Admissions also look closely at:

predicted grades

the personal statement

school reference

overall academic profile

So a weaker LNAT score does not automatically rule someone out, especially if the rest of the application is strong.

2. Student Finance timing won’t be affected.

She can still complete her Student Finance application before she has a firm choice. The system allows students to update the university later once decisions are confirmed, so there’s no disadvantage in applying early even if Durham hasn’t replied yet.

3. Many applicants are in exactly the same position.
Durham receives a very large number of applications for Law each year, and decisions are often released in batches rather than gradually. It’s very common for applicants to have all their other offers but still be waiting for Durham. I study English at Durham but was in the exact same position last year - and didn't get an offer till middle of March. I can completely empathises with the anxiousness in waiting - it ate me up last year.

4. It’s good she already has another university she’d be happy with.
That’s honestly the healthiest way to approach the process. Still hope for Durham but to ensure she already has a place she would enjoy if it doesn’t work out.

Waiting is often the hardest part of the UCAS process, especially for students who already deal with anxiety. The important thing to remember is that no news really does just mean no decision yet. Reassure her by reminding her others are in this position!

Wishing your daughter the best of luck with the rest of her applications - and hopefully Durham won’t keep everyone waiting much longer 😅.

Hi, I wanted to echo the author's concerns about how the delay in responses from Durham is impacting on students, and I can only only empathise with what her daughter must be going through at the moment. My son has also applied for law at Durham, and has long since received offers from all his other chosen Universities except Durham. This ongoing wait has definitely affected him too, and the uncertainty is so unhelpful for any student as they enter the final few months before exams. I've seen lots of responses from helpful DU Reps about the holistic approach and how this means the admissions process takes longer etc. However, there have also been recent media reports about ongoing industrial action by academic staff at Durham (a work to rule over work loads and staffing cuts). I do wonder whether this may be an underlying reason why so many students across a wide range of subjects are still waiting on Durham? Perhaps it might be a good idea for such a well regarded University to provide better communication about timescales to applicants, at the very least to help those who may be struggling with the wait at such an important time? In the mean time, good luck to everyone still waiting. Durham is clearly a fantastic university in so many ways, however, there are definitely other equally wonderful universities out there!

Hiya!! I completely understand the concern - the wait can be really difficult, especially when students have already heard back from their other universities and are trying to focus on their final months before exams. I was in the exact same position last year, and head back middle of March - I can completely empathises and understand what students are feeling. The best thing is to keep encouraging your son to keep pursing his academics and keeping high morale.

It may be reassuring to know that delays around this stage of the cycle are actually something that happens most years at Durham. In fact, a number of changes have been made in recent cycles to help speed the process up, so although it might not feel like it for current applicants, the admissions timeline is generally improving compared with previous years.

In terms of timescales, Durham doesn’t usually provide exact dates because decisions can vary by course and by application. However, the university does state on its website that applicants who applied before the January equal consideration deadline should normally hear back by the end of March. As we’re currently only at the beginning of March, there is still time within that window for decisions to be released. You can see the guidance here: https://www.durham.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/how-to-apply/what-happens-to-your-application/selection-process/

I appreciate that the uncertainty can feel stressful at this point in the year, but hopefully that timeline provides a little reassurance that applications are still being processed within the expected period.

Wishing your son and everyone else waiting the very best of luck with both their offers and their upcoming exams.

Daughter got Law offer yesterday, and she’s a gap year student with A levels already.

So they are probably still going through a lot of applications in the cycle.

Best of luck to you all and your young people. ✌️
