Why I chose to study Biomedical Science at Kingston University

My choice to study Biomedical Science at Kingston University was primarily driven by curiosity. I was interested in how the human body works and how science and research can improve people’s lives. Having grown up in a country affected by conflict and where access to healthcare was limited, I became interested in the science behind disease and research that leads to better treatments. I wanted to choose a course that allowed me to contribute to future medical advances and that’s exactly what my course allows me to do; to explore these questions while developing practical laboratory skills.

An interesting part of the course is the variety of topics we explore from looking at molecular biology and processes that drive DNA mutations, the human physiology to immunology and how your body fights of a common cold - and other intense infections - I particularly enjoy the practical laboratory classes because they allow me to apply the theory behind what I have learnt and gain hands on experience; it also serves as a change in scenery. Switching from the normal classroom setting helps build my confidence working in a laboratory environment as well as giving me a glimpse into what my future career in research or diagnostics may look like.

My advice to new students is to stay curious and answer those lingering questions. Make the most out of the laboratory sessions and resources available. Biomedical Science can be challenging but it is definitely rewarding if you are passionate and motivated in making a difference in the life sciences field.
