If she likes me, why is she acting like this?

I was recently told on good authority that a girl really likes me. I know her name but that's it. We were in one pretty big class last year and I did notice her looking at me a few times but we aren't in any classes this year. One of her friends recently told me, "she thinks you're really cute and likes you" and then said "don't tell her I told you that though". I was pretty thrilled to be honest. As luck would have it, the next day I was walking past the supermarket and she came out with a shopping bag, she saw me but my heart sank because she walked past with her eyes on the pavement. I'm ngl she looked like she'd seen a ghost. I was going to say hi, but she made off too quickly and then I literally saw her running away and up the steps to the block of flats she lives in. I already knew she lived there as it's a place loads of people live in and someone else I know lives in the same block and I saw her there a few months ago. It was really embarrassing to be honest. What am I supposed to do now, I really want to go out with someone but this sort of thing happens all the time, like I'm told someone likes me but it turns out they don't.

Honestly, You should not do much, but you did say that you really want to go out, so i'd just recommend you to just try initiate conversation with here whenever you can with out seeming like you really want to talk, just do simple small talk or if she is in your current classes you could ask her a aid in anything related. Also don't take my advice to heart as i have only once dated and that was great until my parents found out and had to break up(horrid) but after a year later i got together with the girl(during the break after my GCSE exams) and we had a good-ish week until it started going down hill and i havent had a proper convo with her since last year but i do want to believe we are still together as we never actually broke up, i actually still like her lol.
I repeat do not take my advice or whatever this is to heart and just be you, if she doesn't like you and it was a lie, dont be heart broken "There is plenty of fish in the ocean." but do try talking to her because she could just be shy (50/50) or just doesn't like you the person who told you had lied (very low chance). Good luck soldier

dude , given her reaction she definitely likes you , shes probably just too shy to look at you , trust me us girls do that a lot when we like people. i can assure you as soon as she got home she immediately told all her friends that shed seen you in public . she probably really likes you but got stage fright when she saw you , it happens all the time ,if she really likes you she will act like this because she likes you shes nervous to say anything in case she messes everything up and she is scared of that because shes into you. i would go ask her out , shes never going to come up to you until you show interest , you need to make the first move , keep smiling at her then shot your shot (but not too soon , take it slow , just smiles and casual chat at first), the worst she says is no and then it wont be awkward because your not even in any classes together , so its just better to ask her , good luck
