Choosing my firm

Ive gotten 4/5 offers so far from uni of Bristol Leeds bath and Nottingham for chemistry. I’m honestly stuck between choosing. Ik for a fact ill have nottingham as my insurance but im trying to pick between leeds bath and bristol. Bath and bristol are lovely but they are both expensive and Bath doesn’t have as much diversity which is rly important for me (black muslim). Bristol and Bath expensive but they are rlly good unis. I also can’t stomach my toilets being a cubicle id much rather live in an accommodation where I’m sharing a normal toilet and shower with 2 or 3 more people. So an ensuite or knowing for sure that i won’t be sharing with as many people will also be helping me decide. But help me out here 🙏🙏

Hi @hgghghgh

Congratulations on your offers!

Choosing the right university can be hard. I'd love to share some general advise, alongside some specific tips.

Here are some general comparison points:
Grade requirements 📖- Compare the requirements to get into each university. If it is a close decision between the two, I'd recommend choosing the one with slightly lower requirements to relieve some pressure if possible.
Modules 📚- Head onto the university website and compare the modules for your course of interest. This way you can see which course is more closely tailored to your interests.
Distance 🛣️- This depends on how much you value being in close distance to home, therefore varying importance to everyone.
Quality 🎓- What's the reputation of the course? You could look at other students opinions, awards and more.

I completely understand the concern over cost as this personally influenced my choice. You want to make sure you can truly enjoy your time at university and be in a comfortable living situation. I always recommend prioritising your wellbeing over anything, additionally this will help you achieve better grades. If cost is a concern, I recommend looking around at different accommodations to compare prices, be prepared to budget and prepare to look for part-time work. Your university may offer part-time work in ambassador roles!

When it comes to diversity, I recommend going where you feel most comfortable! You could check out the various societies at each university and see if there is any you would enjoy joining.

Good luck with your journey, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Hi @hgghghgh

It can be tough making a decision but it sounds like you know what factors are important to you to consider, which is a good start!

I have created a post with lots of tips on how to make a decision which I think might be helpful
Tips on Making a University Choice - The Student Room

My top tips would be
-Go to open days!
-Make a pros and cons list - good to write your thoughts out and make them clear.

I hope this helps and good luck making a decision

Hi there ☺️

Congrats on getting those offers! I am a current Bath student so I can offer some insight although I think the best way to know if a university is right for you is visiting offer holder days if you can. As it can help see if you can envision yourself living in that city for 3 or more years!

Although I don't do chemistry, I am a life sciences student so I am quite familiar with the labs. Yes although the labs aren't the latest, newest equipment, I would say its practical and the support you get from the lecturers are really good. I also chose Bath because I liked that it was a campus university and everything is within walking distance especially if you're living on campus first year.

With that said, Bath isn't as diverse as compared to bigger cities like Leeds or Nottingham but I would say the university student population is quite diverse and we have a lot of active cultural/religious societies. With the size of Bath, I really enjoyed that you get to be able to build your own community as well and where-ever you go whether that be the city or campus, you will always see someone you know which is great!

With the university managed accommodations, there is ensuite and shared bathrooms offered on both the campus and city locations. Some you may share with a few people and then others you could be sharing with 12+ people. Please look at Reslife Bath which has all the accommodations listed and the prices do vary as well.

As I am from the North, I would say Bath in terms of groceries is on the pricer side especially for food and rent. However most students manage this by budgeting and finding part-time jobs like being an outreach ambassador which I found to be really flexible and works well with my studies.

For me, when I was deciding my firm choice, I looked at my priorities and what was important to me - safety, course structures, city vs campus, employability etc. I would suggest like above and make a list of what is important and what sort of university experience would suit you best.

I am happy to answer any other questions or queries that you may have.

How easy was it for you to find accommodation after your first year and which accommodation did you stay in in first year
Hi there ☺️,

We started looking around December time but there are plenty of housing available throughout the year. Now there are even more bus routes which cover the areas which are populated with students, and it is great and convenient. The university also offers a lot of support especially introducing what to expect when privately renting places.

For my first year I was really lucky and I got offered my first choice Marlborough and Salsbury Court which meant I had my own ensuite. However I do know friends who had shared bathrooms and it honestly isn't as bad it made to seem online. They all said there were enough toilets and showers which were separated and in the further years you do have to share.

I hope this helps!

Hi, I would advise communicating with your chosen universities accommodation team to arrange your required arrangements.

Hi there!

It sounds like one of the most important things is the accommodation and bathrooms, which I agree with and was one of the main things I looked for when picking my uni! Which place has the best accommodation as this sounds like it would be worth picking if you have no other specific reasons for one over another. You can have a look on the websites, or contact the accommodations team to get tours of the accommodation (even if this is online) and then you can see which you like the look of. Another factor could be how they decide which accommodation you get - for some I think it is a preference system and you get allocated a halls, but for others you might just be able to book a specific room so have a look into this too.

In terms of diversity, this is also so important. I've never been to Bath or Bristol so I am not sure what it is like there, but I know Nottingham has a great, diverse student group and I am sure Leeds does too. This is something important so it could be good to speak to people from these universities to see their experience of this.

Have a look on each website at the modules that the courses offer too as this was something which swayed my decision to Hallam. You want to make sure you are enjoying the modules and the course as this is the main thing about uni so have a look and see if you are happy with them.

If you can, going to any open days could help with the decision making too. I found these really helpful and there may be some applicant open days coming up so this could be worth looking at.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy - SHU student ambassador 🙂

I have an offer for Natural Sciences as Bath but I really love Chemistry, but don't like Physics. Should I switch to just Chemistry? Is that possible?

Thanks.
Hi there 😊,
