Student finance for RUK student studying in Scotland for an integrated master.

Hello, I’m in year 13 right now and I will be starting university this September. I am planning to go to university in Scotland (Edinburgh or Glasgow) and I applied for BSc Chemistry. However, I would like to switch to doing an MChem when available. The course length will change from 4 years to 5 years. Will I need to apply for student finance any differently or will the student finance be able to cover all my years? Many thanks.

Hi there,

Do you currently live in England and will be going to Scotland for the purpose of study? Can you also confirm the full name of the course.

Thanks, Drew

Thank you for replying. I currently live in England and I’ll be going to Scotland for the purpose of study. My course is Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry (with Glasgow) or Medicinal and Biological Chemistry (with Edinburgh).

Hi there,

Is the course full time or part time? Do you hold any other qualifications currently?

Thanks,
Claire

Thanks. Just to confirm you will at one point be looking to switch from a BA Hons to an integrated masters? Do you know in which year of the course you would be making this change? Thanks, Leah.

I believe it’s 2027-2028 but I’m not entirely sure.

Hi there,

Based on what you have advised you should be eligible for the finance and would apply as normal. Easiest way is online and as soon as the applications open every year. Nothing is definite till you apply and we can review this.

If you don't apply for the 5 year course originally, we would advise to change the application as soon as possible. Your university can send us a change of circumstances to change the application.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi thank you very much! However, the situation gets a little bit more complicated now as my family is planning to move to Scotland probably around September this year or early next year 2027. Would I be eligible for free tuition fee after my family and I have lived in Scotland for 3 years? And how would it possibly affect my student loan in year 3 onwards?

Hi there,

Are you going to be permanently moving to Scotland? Thanks, Jason

Yes but that will probably after I’ve enrolled first year in university

So when I applied, I’m still living in England with an England’s post code.

Hi there,

If you are still living in England when you apply and then you move then you would still apply to Student Finance England for the duration of your course.

Thanks, Drew
