Uni and laptop recommendations

In september i’m hopefully going to uni to do forensic science. At college i do bio, psych btec and crim and never really needed a laptop cause i use an ipad.

For uni what would i need ipad/laptop wise for forensic science course.

My current ipad is the 10th gen most basic one you can get and ive got a pencil and keyboard and it works fine but think ill need something a little more with uni. Ive seen the macbook neo but id rather soemthing a little better as not sure on my opinions on it

Hi!

I'd probably recommend getting a good Windows laptop rather than relying only on your iPad. A lot of uni courses use different software for data analysis and research and they tend to run much better on a laptop.

For example, universities often use IBM SPSS Statistic for analysing data and statistics. I study Sociology with Psychology and Data Analytics, and we use SPSS quite a lot for data analysis. I run it on my Huawei MateBook and it works really well. With forensic science you'll probably have to analyse datasets or research results too, so you might end up using software like that as well.

I also have an Apple iPad (10th generation) and used it quite a bit in first year for notes, especially with the pencil. But by second and third year I've found it a lot easier to just using my laptop for everything. All my notes, assignments and research are in one place, and since you'll be writing essays and coursework on your laptop anyway its easier to look back at notes while working or adding things to them.

So I'd say your iPad is useful if you like using it, but getting a decent Windows laptop will probably make things easier, especially once you start doing bigger assignments or using different software at uni.

Hope this helps! ☺️

Hi Flower,

I think its down to personal preference primarily, but just to share my own thoughts, I absolutely love 2-in-1 touchscreen laptops because they double up as tablets so you can use them as either.

I have a beautiful Dell laptop (the latest equivalent is the Dell 14 plus 2-in-1 laptop) - its lasted me almost nine years and has so many good points about it.

At uni, I blasted SPSS and IBM AMOS stats software through it daily, had up to 20-30 academic papers and docs open on it at once, and its battery lasted several hours. Also, due to its slightly littler size it fitted in my bag and wasn't cumbersome to carry.

It also doesn't have to be Dell - these 2-in-1s are also made by Samsung, HP and Lenovo.

A lot of my cohort had Apples but I didn't opt for one because they are quite pricey whereas you can generally get other brands for much less.

Totally up to you but I'd definitely consider...

Battery

RAM capacity

Internal memory

Weight and size

Resolution and screen specs

Hope this helps, best of luck 🙂

Hi there! 😀
For most university courses, you’ll probably want a laptop rather than just an iPad. While iPads can be great for notes, a full laptop is usually easier when it comes to writing reports, using university software, and working on multiple things at once.
Your current iPad with the keyboard and pencil could still be really useful for note-taking, but having a laptop alongside it would likely make things easier for assignments and lab reports.
The MacBook Neo that Apple recently released is designed more as a lightweight everyday laptop for things like schoolwork, browsing, and general productivity. It could work for basic university tasks like writing essays, research, and presentations, but some students prefer a slightly more powerful model (for example, a MacBook Air) because it tends to handle heavier workloads and multitasking a bit better.
For a forensic science course, you’ll mainly be doing things like:

writing lab reports
research and reading papers
presentations
general coursework software

So you probably don’t need an extremely powerful computer, but having a reliable laptop with good battery life and storage will help a lot.
It might also be worth checking the university course page or asking the department if there are any specific software requirements before buying anything.
Hope that helps! 😄

Neo would be enough for work , macbook air is the perfect choice if all your applications are compatible cause they last so long and the M chip is so optimized. However if you are not sure just go with windows laptop

Hi @Flower1234q,

As mentioned already, I think it is about your personal preference but let me give you my experience with this. I had a MacBook pro as I used a lot of Adobe softwares and needed to edit footage but I think the new MacBook neo would be a great option for you. I wanted a MacBook as I have an iPhone and liked having the combability of both. I am debating getting the new MacBook myself, especially for the price. Apple also do it for £499 for students which is a really great price! You can find out more about the Macbook Neo specs and education discount here.

There are also many great laptops such as HP ones which I have heard great things about. I don't know the specs but I know that you can get ones that run into a tablet. There are many websites that compare laptops and other devices which may be useful. Whenever I have visited Currys, the staff have always been so helpful in choosing the right item so that is also another option to explore.

Hope this helps,
^Zac

Hi there!

I feel like I will just be echoing what everyone else has said, but it really is up to you and what you will be needing your laptop for.

I have a MacBook Air and it has been fine for me! However, I don't necessarily think you need an Apple laptop and if you can get one which doesn't cost as much it will be just as good. Lots of my friends have HP laptops and have said that they have been really good so this could be another one for you to look at too.

Some of my friends have iPads too and if you have a keyboard with it it could work well, but for me I found mine to be too much hassle and I much prefer using my laptop so personally I would recommend getting a laptop if you can but I wouldn't worry about it being the best one you can find.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
