Best degree for sports media? 🎥⚽️

I love sport and want a career in sports media. I’m not sure what course is best: sports journalism, journalism, media/communications, broadcast/digital media, or something sport-related with media modules. What did you choose and why, and what helped you get experience (uni radio/TV, social, placements)? Any unis you’d recommend for this path?

Hi there,

Great to hear about your interest in sports media 🙂

It can help to start by thinking about the kind of role you’d like in the industry. For example, if you’re interested in reporting, writing, or presenting, courses like sports journalism or journalism could be a good fit.

If you’re more interested in producing content, working with media platforms, or digital media, then media/communications or broadcast/digital media courses might suit you better.

Course pages usually include a careers prospects section, where you can see the kinds of roles previous students have gone into. It’s also worth looking at the course modules to make sure the content genuinely interests you. If you’re still unsure, noting the topics you’re most excited about can help you decide which course fits best.

Gaining experience alongside your degree is really important in this field. Many students get involved with student radio/TV societies, work placements, or volunteering to build practical skills.

At my university, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), students can join Moore Student Radio and Moore TV, which are student societies and great opportunities to gain hands-on experience.

Liverpool is also a great city for sport, with Liverpool FC and Everton FC, and many students find part-time matchday or event roles alongside their studies.

If you’d like to explore the courses at LJMU, you can take a look here:

Sports Journalism, Journalism and Media: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/subjects/journalism-media-and-film

Sport: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/subjects/sport

Hope this helps and good luck with your applications!

Hi @scarlsholder,

I'm studying journalism at City St George's, University of London and we also have a sports journalism module. It covers a range of sports with loads of chances for practical work like writing match reports, etc. It gave me skills in sports media while still being able to experience other areas of journalism in my degree.

Since City St George's is a London uni, they have strong connections in the industry and I have had opportunities in meeting some amazing people in sports media.

Overall, there are a few routes you can take if you want to work in sports media. If you're looking for something specifically sports focused, a sports journalism degree may be ideal. If you're looking for a degree with variety that still covers sport journalism, then a journalism degree might suit better. It all depends on what you're looking for.

Here is a link to the City St George's BA Journalism page: Journalism BA (Hons) Undergraduate degree

Good luck, I hope that helps! 😊
