As someone who mentored A level chemistry from around the time I did my own A levels through to the start of my degree, I can attest that everyone’s progress is different and I have seen students who initially typically scored marks in the 50 - 60% region on past papers (in timed exam conditions) go on to get A*’s but I have also seen students who have scored higher marks (80+%) get complacent and ultimately miss out on the higher grades.

In my experience, the students who have started out less strongly but have gone on to attain high grades are generally those who know the syllabus and understand (most of) the content well, but have difficulty with knowing which bits of it are appropriate to invoke and how to take this knowledge and make an excellent answer out of it.

Of course the above is remedied in part by attempting past paper questions, but I feel the most important way of improving is going through your answers and the mark schemes with either a teacher or a more confident peer to explain what went wrong and why and making corrections.

You can always try this by posting questions and your answers to them here on TSR and someone here will surely know how best to explain the MS and how to improve your answer.
