Hiya!

Sorry to hear this is causing stress - while different unis will of course have different policies, marking criteria, etc, I can’t imagine this will impact your grade much! That sounds like only a minor formatting error so while points for presentation may be impacted slightly, the actual content is what matters the most and makes up the majority of the grade. To ease your mind I would recommend emailing your lecturer, module leader, or whoever else is marking the essay. Hopefully they’ll be happy to clarify for you.

Hi there,

I believe you should be fine, it should not impact the grade too much. You should get a good mark as long as your essay is good

Ah thank you so much! I spent two weeks on it and I'm really confident with this assignment but once I saw it today ( The deadline was yesterday) I saw the in - text citations were still red LOL

Depends. Were you given a marking sheet? It might break down how much is everything worth. Formatting is worth only 5 marks on my assignments, but it might vary uni to uni. It doesn't tend to be a lot though. And you're a first year, so they're a bit kinder and lenient with you on these sort of things. Don't worry about it too much

Hi,

It depends on whether the marking rubric specifies a certain formatting style, but even if it does, the color of your in-text citations is usually a really minor issue. It’s often only worth about 5-10% of marks, so it shouldn’t be a big problem. I’d recommend contacting the module lead just to double-check.

Hope this helps,

Definitely have a look at your marking sheet or criteria if possible, or email to ask! It’s important for lecturers to be transparent about how marks are assigned so hopefully that information will have been or be readily provided. Honestly I wouldn’t worry too much though, as others on this thread have said it definitely won’t lose you more than a few marks if anything, and they’re definitely more forgiving of small things like this in first year at least this experience means you’ll probably never again forget to proof read and double check your citations

Hi Anom,

I definitely agree that this may only have a very minor impact on your grade. If your concerned, contact your module tutor and ask how much it will impact your grade. This may give you some comfort.

I also recommend checking your marking rubric. You may find this individually or on your assessment brief. This will highlight what percentage of your grade is made up of formatting. You may just be docked a couple marks for the formatting error. This is nothing signficant.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

Hey there,

The most important thing about essay writing is about the content of your writing and how well you present your argument. Whilst presentation is important for boosting your marks, presentation errors will not significantly impact your overall grade. Particularly in your first year, it is all about getting to grips with how to approach your writing most effectively, mistakes are a part of the process. Of course it is always worth contacting your personal tutor for advice on how to get the highest mark possible!

Hope this helps
