Apprenticeship or university

Those that had to choose between a degree apprenticeship or going to university, which option did you go for and why?

My son is leaning towards the apprenticeship - work experience, no debt, salary.
He is a bit worried about missing out on university life however

My boyfriend chose a degree apprenticeship mainly because it’s a financially better option - no debt and getting paid at the same time for a degree - for the area he wants to go into (nuc engineering). Only thing is it’s year longer than uni, but again he’s getting paid and owing nothing.

I, on the other hand, chose uni because I’m not sure what career (in biosciences) I want to go into, and because there’s basically no entry level degree apprenticeships in my chosen subject. On top of that, I want to potentially do research and a phd after my integrated masters for which a full-time academic path that revolves around research is more beneficial.

The best option just depends on the subject area and what you want to do with your degree. If you have a specific career in mind and there’s a degree apprenticeship available in that area I would absolutely take it - experience in a closely related job on top of a degree is great for future careers. However if you’re not sure of where you want to go or more interested in learning about your area of interest than applying it in a specific role then uni is a good option.
Remember if you haven’t applied yet you can always apply to both and decide after you receive offers )

Also a lot of unis offer placement years! Obviously not the same as a degree apprenticeship, but if you’re looking at uni and worry abt missing out on experience then placement years are a great option
