If I fail 3 modules and the referrals, will I resit the whole year?

I’m on track to fail 2 modules this semester and one module from the first semester. To be honest, I’m really disappointed in myself and my performance given I know I’m capable of getting a first-class degree, at this rate I’ll be lucky to get a 3rd class degree, which will be useless, so I am happy to redo the whole year and pay for it.
Taking that into account, If I fail my 30 credit final year project and fail 2 other modules and fail the resits at the end of the year:

1. Will I have the opportunity to redo the whole year and will I be automatically re-enrolled to do this?
2. Will my grades in the repeated year be capped at pass rate?
3. Will the failed year contribute to my gpa?(guessing not)
4. Is it better to just to do my best to get a bare pass instead of redoing the year?

Thank you,
I would appreciate any help or advice, to help me process what I need to do to or what to expect.

Hey,

I can hear how much pressure you are under right now, and the fact that you are already thinking practically about your options rather than just hoping things work out is actually a good sign. It means you have time to make informed decisions rather than being caught off guard. To address your specific questions as best as I can, though I want to be upfront that these policies vary quite a bit between universities, so please treat this as a general steer rather than definitive advice:

Repeating the year is usually possible but it is not automatic. You would typically need to apply to your university to be allowed to repeat, and there may be conditions attached. Do not assume it will just happen without a conversation with your department.

The failed year generally does not contribute to your final degree classification if you repeat it, but again this varies. Most universities use the repeat year to replace the failed attempt, not to average alongside it.

Whether to aim for a bare pass or repeat the year depends on a few things: how the failed modules are weighted, whether passes are enough to progress, and what your degree goals are. If a third is genuinely not going to serve you, then repeating might be the right call, but it is a significant commitment both financially and in terms of time.

The most important thing right now is to speak to someone at your university as soon as possible, before the end of semester if you can. Your personal tutor is a good first port of call, and your student services or academic support team will be able to walk you through the exact rules that apply to your course and situation. At Salford we have a service called AskUS that handles exactly these kinds of academic queries, and most universities will have an equivalent. Do not try to navigate this alone based on forum answers, including mine, because the details really do matter and the specifics will be in your university regulations.

You have not run out of options. The key thing right now is getting the right information early so you can make a clear decision rather than being reactive.

Good Luck 😊
