Student finance eligibility

Hi, I’m feeling quite frustrated as I already missed a year due to my move to the UK (from Germany) and really don’t want to miss another. I’m trying to figure out if I’m eligible for Student Finance England. I have settled status under EUSS and have been given home fee status by my universities under Brexit protected rights. I moved to the UK in November 2023, but my father has been living and working (self-employed) in the UK since 2020, and I joined him later. My course starts in September 2026, and I believe I don’t meet the 3-year residency requirement myself. Would I still be eligible for student finance as a child of a worker, or does the 3-year rule mean I won’t qualify?

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated

Hi there,

When does your course start? Before moving to the UK in November 2023 what country did you live in and how long did you live there? Did you move to England in 2023 and have lived there since?

Thanks, Drew

I will begin my course at the University of Warwick (GGC3) on 5 October 2026. Prior to moving to the UK, I lived in Germany for approximately 10 years. I have been residing continuously in the UK since my arrival.

Hi there,

EU Nationals can receive support as a home student if they meet the following criteria;

Are ordinarily resident in England on the first day of the first AY of the course

Have been granted EU Settled Status (EUSSILR) prior to the first day of the first AY of their course

Have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for the 3 years prior to the first day of the first AY of their course.

This means as you have not had 3 years ordinarily resident in the UK you would not be eligible for funding until you do. Is there later start date for this course in January?

Thanks, Drew
