Don’t know what you want to study at University – here is what you should do:

It’s ok not to know what you want to study at university, but now that you know you don’t have a plan, it’s time to make one. This blog will give some guidance on how you can decide what you want to study.

Go to summer schools! Summer schools are a great chance to have a range of taster sessions across different degrees, see the campus of different universities and learning what studying will be like once you’re in higher education. Most universities will offer summer schools around July, and the application process is very easy! This is also a great addition to your UCAS application.

Speak to a career counsellor or a trusted adult so they can help you find some areas of interest. They will help you narrow down your options and provide practical next steps to finalise your choice.

Apply for social mobility programmes like Sutton Trust Pathways. These programmes help you apply for university; they offer you taster lectures and provide you with some work experience. These programmes also look good on your UCAS, and they will help you decide whether the pathway you are on is well-suited for you.

Get some work experience during the Summer of Year 12. This will help you get something to add to your UCAS, but also will help either confirm or reject different areas of study.

Hopefully, your A-level subject choices will give an indication of where your interests lie. Regardless, it's important to make sure you get the best grades possible at A-levels because, regardless of what you go into, good grades will help you.
