AS Further Maths

I am not familiar with the A-Level system (as I am spanish), therefore I want to understand the different types of papers (1-4). I am thinking about doing full A-level Physics and Maths, and AS Further Maths (less time intensive), however I am unsure about the papers for FM, 1 and 3 and 1 and 4?! Thanks in advance

OK, so AS and A-levels are different qualifications. They're the same level (high school / pre-university for most countries) but an AS level is only worth half and is typically easier. One word of caution is most universities require 3 A-levels (although those working on UCAS points will usually accept 2 A-levels + 1 AS so long as you get enough points). Anyways for question papers:

A-level further maths has 3 papers:

paper 1 (pure maths)

paper 2 (pure maths)

paper 3 (2 chosen modules from: discrete (maths that isn't applied), mechanics (this is basically a free grade for those doing physics because of the similarities), and statistics)

AS further maths has 2 papers:

paper 1 (pure maths)

paper 2 (2 chosen modules, similar to A-level)

A-level further maths is a lot of work and is by far the hardest A-level subject (even for those confident in maths, I'm the only one from my old school who hasn't dropped A-level FM, and we had some very strong mathematicians). So I'd recommend only doing it as an extra 4th subject and see how it goes (if it goes well, you can drop whatever else you chose, if it doesn't, you have an A-level other than Further Maths as your 3rd, though bear in mind this is just from my experience and 4 A-levels is a lot of work, so do your own research and decision-making, don't just go with what I suggest)

Hope this helps

I should note this is for the exam board AQA, if you're doing it with a different exam board, look at their exam schedule. For instance, search "[exam board] June 2026 exam timetable" and it'll tell you how many exams there are for each and what they contain
