I have a Blade! It's pretty much the best thing ever.
My college got head of the river this year, and you're right, we burnt an old boat...not the Empacher....
Massively jealous. I would kill for a blade. Sucks that a) I'm at rowing and b) my college is sufficiently well placed in both sets of bumps that I end up in a fairly well placed boat where you have to do more than row until the boat in front crabs Oh well *anticipates another set of spoons*
I don't know what I'd do with one if I had one, I just really, really want one...
They don't get burnt as much as they're used, do they? Seeing as every team uses one but doesn't burn one a year (or however often they're replaced).
Sorry, I don't know much about it as you can probably tell, but I would have thought that is where the supply is coming from.
Um, a boat lasts for much longer than a year. But the point was boats are now made out of 'carbon reinforced plastic' or fibreglass not wood, anymore. So they aren't replacing the wooden boats and eventually, a club will run out of wooden boats. Since plastic or fibreglass are more problematic to burn, this may be a problem. Except for us, we won't run out of wooden boats ever!

Surely they could just have one made as a symbolic thing as that is what it really is...or just buy a cheap wooden one and paint it. Or alternately they could get someone to make one out of paper and burn it in a kind of Viking funeral way...

They used to make composite shells out of papier mache in Victorian times. Maybe they could do that. Though I guess what they would be more likely to do is just burn a fibreglass boat toxic fumes and all.
They've never been to keen on health and safety- one of the traditions is the winning crew jumps the burning boat (in formal wear after boat club dinner) and I believe recently a cox set herself on fire during a boat burning.

Yeah, our college technically didn't allow us to have a boat burning as there was nowhere it could be safely held, or something.
I think the name Coxfridge-upon-Amford ought to be invented, right now. Oh look, I just did. Yay! It is now the recognised term because I said so, and I are smart.
