Not fully understanding the question - are you asking whether a college that has both catered and non-catered accommodation will decide for you or if you get to choose?
does anyone know if i can request catered accommodation or will the university decide based on the number of available places at each college?
Hello!
Catering works on a college by college basis. So for example my college is John Snow and it is self-catered, which meant I had a shared kitchen with 7 of my first-year flatmates and cooked my own meals. However, other colleges like St. Mary's for instance are completely catered which means if you join that college you will have three meals a day served to you in their dining hall! However, some colleges like Hatfield and St Cuthberts are mixed i.e. some of their buildings are catered and others aren't and if you join these colleges, you'll get to send in your preferences. A full breakdown of the catering options available to you can be seen on page 6 here.

as in i really want a catered college and is there any way i can tell the uni to just consider me for that? i highly doubt that's possible since on the website they say that they allocate colleges using a random process but there's no harm in asking elsewhere ig

Hi!
Unfortunately, you cannot explicitly request a catered college - the best way to ensure this is by ranking only catered colleges in your top preferences. Durham University will aim to match your preferences as much as possible, there are other factors such as ensuring colleges have a mix of subjects, demand and ensuring a balance across colleges which could affect this. 🙂
