SFE Funding Query: Ordinary Degree to OU "Top-Up" (The -1 Formula)

Hi everyone,I’m looking for some clarity on my SFE funding eligibility for an Open University (OU) course starting in October 2026. I’ve run the numbers using the standard SFE formula, but I’m getting a negative result and want to know if the "Part-Time" or "Top-Up" rules change things. My Background:

Previous Study: I completed 3 years of a full-time BSc in Accounting and Finance from 2022 to 2025.

Qualification Achieved: I didn't get the full Honours; my HEAR officially confirms I was awarded an Ordinary Degree (Level 6).

New Plan: I want to do a credit transfer to the Open University to finish a full Bachelors (Honours) Open Degree. I’ll be entering at Stage 3 (the final year).

The Predicament:
Length of your new course + 1 gift year years of previous study at the higher education level.

in my case:
1+1-3= -1years

My Questions:

1.

Since the OU is technically Part-Time (even if I do 120 credits), does my previous full-time study still count against my tuition fee gift year? I've heard part-time rules are different.

2.

Does the fact that I am "topping up" from an Ordinary Degree to an Honours Degree give me an automatic exception for that final year of funding?

I’m planning to apply before the May 15th priority deadline, so any insight would be huge. Thanks!

Hi there,

Can you please tell us the name of the Open University that you want to study? We're checking just in case the new course is an exception.

Thanks, Graeme
