English Language or Classical Civilisation?

I’m in year 11 and decided to drop further maths as part of my A levels choice (my other choices i’ve put down were history, chemistry, maths). I want to take 4 to begin with and drop one later, maybe doing the AS level of it, and my options for a 4th is either classical civilisation (OCR) or english language (AQA).

I’ve always been very interested in linguistics and its significance but another coursework subject on top of history coursework, a research program i’m starting in year 12 and a forced EPQ/research project at school might be a bit much.

Similarly, i’ve been into classics and the ancient world starting from before secondary, only not taking them at gcse due to personal issues, and would be interested in picking them back up. I can’t find loads of information at both subjects at A level though.

To anyone doing either classical civilisation or english language at A Level, how do you find them? also are they respected subjects? would you recommend them?

I'm doing both and I would recommend doing Classical Civ over English language. The workload of English Lang just isn't worth it. and the AOs are really hard to get in essays, no matter how good you think it is. Classical Civ is a doozy if you have any familiarity with the ancient world and is really discussing themes rather than anything concrete.

Would your school have more information on them? It may be worth asking them, so you can gain more info before making a decision.

Read into the modules before doing A-Level Classics and know what interests you... My school picked very history and battles-heavy modules when I was expecting love and relationships/poetry/philosophy/greek art stuff! So with that in mind I regret picking it over English... But it's completely up to the centre, the teaching style, your personal interests....

I’m year 13 doing Classics I’d say it’s very much memorisation of the content and applying it to different themes. Overall it’s a very interesting subject but I noticed that people who don’t have a background with Greek mythology find it much harder because they need to learn specific myths/ gods. So if you already know a lot about Greek mythology I’d definitely recommend it! It’s very much respected by top universities and I got offers from UCL and kings with my subjects.
The only downside is that the time restrictions are really bad for the amount of work you have to do. For world of the hero you have to do x3 10 markers, x2 20 mark essays and x1 30 essay in the span of 2hrs 30 min. Also some of OCR’s questions are so niche and out of left field. Like for a Greek art question they asked about the development of the carving of reclining figures?? 😭
Overall it’s a really great subject with very interesting content and I picked it for uni!
