Irish National Living Abroad Eligible for Masters Funding England?

Hello,

I am an Irish national and lived and studied in England from 2019 - 2024. I moved to Germany due to living costs and a family emergency for just over 1.5 years.

I am planning on moving back to the UK and start a full time masters course in September 2026. I only just saw the eligibility requirement of having lived in England for 3 years immediately prior to the course start date for a Masters loan from SFE.

I was always planning on moving back to the UK but I don't have proof of temporary contracts or VISA's as I didn't require a VISA to move to Germany as an EU national. I have been visiting the UK very frequently (around every second month) since I've moved away due to a relationship and I have a self assessment tax return for year 2024-2025 submitted in 2026, as well as UK bank statements that show my frequent visits. I can also prove that I have continued to work as a freelancer, be it in small capacity, in the UK throughout my period abroad.

My question is whether the evidence above would be enough to prove that my time abroad was always meant to be temporary? And therefore would I have a chance at qualifying for a postgrad student loan?

Best,

Best,

Hi there,

Since you're an Irish national you'll be eligible for funding so long as you've lived in the UK or EU in the 3 years prior to the start of your course. Based on what you've said, you meet this criteria.

Just in case you didn't know, the 2026/27 Masters applications are expected to open in June, and you can apply online then.

Thanks, Graeme
