Deciding whether or not to study a postgraduate degree can be a complicated decision - aside from the cost factor, postgraduate degrees require a significant time investment. I thought I'd quickly discuss why I chose to study a postgraduate degree - feel free to add your own experience down below!
One of the main reasons I chose to study my postgraduate in MSc User Experience Design was to open up new career opportunities. Whilst my degree in Fine Art and Art History gave me a solid foundation in design, I wanted to specialise further and gain experience in industry-standard software. A postgraduate degree can also make you a more attractive candidate for skilled management positions.
Another reason was simply to improve my education! My undergraduate degree was with the Kingston School of Art whilst my postgraduate degree is with the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment (ECE). Although moving from a BA to a MSc was a bit of a jump at first, I've learnt so many new things and have met people from educational backgrounds I didn't even know existed.
I've also had the opportunity to experiment with facilities I'd only heard of when studying an arts undergrad - my favourite is the CAVE (Center for Augmented and Virtual Environments) where I've got to test out new applications on VR headsets.
The final reason is that I knew studying a postgraduate degree would suit my learning style. As someone who prefers independent learning, I knew that I would be able to handle the demands of a postgraduate course whilst still balancing part-time work.
