Maths BSc at Bristol vs Durham

I received unconditional offers from Bristol, Durham, Southampton and Royal Holloway all for Mathematics BSc, I've narrowed down my decision to either Bristol or Durham but I'm having trouble deciding between them.

I like to be challenged and i enjoy difficult maths problems and more proof based maths rather than computational. Both courses on the surface look good, the choice of modules look good and they both have the same entry requirements, I have ideas of an MSc afterwards hopefully at Oxford or Cambridge followed, potentially, by a PhD. I'm trying to figure out which course would be better suited to me.

Any guidance/opinions would be appreciated.

Hi!
First of all, well done on your offer to Durham!

From what you’ve said about enjoying more challenging, proof-based maths, Durham would be a really good fit. The BSc Mathematics course is designed to build strong theoretical foundations, with increasing focus on rigorous and abstract mathematics in later years. The course also offers a wide range of optional modules, so you can tailor it towards more pure and proof-heavy topics as you progress. If you'd like to see more about what a day in the life of a maths student is like here at Durham I would recommend reading this article by one of our Maths students here!)

Durham’s Department of Mathematical Sciences is highly ranked in the UK and has a strong research focus, which is great preparation if you’re aiming for an MSc at Oxford or Cambridge and/or further research.

I completely understand that it’s a difficult choice, especially with another great option like Bristol, but if you’re looking for depth, challenge, and a strong theoretical approach, I would definitely say Durham fits the bill!

Best of luck!
