UEA or Loughborough for Energy Engineering?

I have applied for Energy Engineering at both UEA and Loughborough, and cant decide between the two, I have been to offer holder days at both and at each of them I've liked the uni for different reasons. I love the outdoors and green space around UEA, as well as really liking the look of Norwich as a town, and love the sports facilities etc, the course also looks good. Loughborough has a great community vibe which I would love to be a part of, and the engineering facilities were amazing, and I liked all the lecturers I spoke to. However I spoke to about 9 different people from engineering department at Loughborough, compared to 2-3 at UEA. I am worried that I would be less likely to take part in sport at Loughborough as it so competitive, and I am not looking to professional standard, but would like to compete in BUCS etc. Just wondering what other peoples views were on student life at each, or what information people have got from open days?

Hey @Al!ceB!

Good to hear you are considering UEA for Energy Engineering! I don't study engineering myself, but I'll do my best to tell you a bit about student life at UEA anyway!

I totally agree with you about the greenspace on campus being amazing, it's one of the reasons I chose to study at UEA in the first place (I study Ecology and Conservation so it's particularly important!). The grounds turn into wonderful meadows in the summer, and the walk around the lake is so gorgeous! I still haven't explored all of the campus grounds after being there for 2 years!

Being a campus uni, the community feel is really strong, and this is especially amplified if you live in campus accommodation. There are lots of societies for you to get involved with too, which help you to meet like-minded people and build your own community- there is an engineering society too!

The sports facilities are fab, there is a good mix between high-level, very competitive sport and casual fun. There is also a big competition every year between UEA and the University of Essex (kind of like a big sports day), which is really popular and really fun! UEA also has sports scholarships available if you compete at a BUCS level, regardless of whether you study sport science or not.

Norwich is a great city, I really love it! It was recently named the best place to live in the UK too, so you'll definitely have a good time exploring what the city has to offer! I particularly enjoy wandering around the city with friends at the weekend and getting food from the market!

There is a web page about student experiences in studying engineering at UEA, it has some videos that might be worth a watch to get a feel for the course, and links to the unibuddy platform where you can chat to current students about their experience. In terms of it being a small department, I wouldn't let that put you off, you will also be lectured by people from other departments (e.g. maths), and get a chance to meet master's and PhD students, so you'll meet and learn from a variety of people. You also share some of your first year modules with maths students, so you'll get to meet them too. I study ecology which is also a small department and consequently a small cohort, and I love it! It means I have got to know everyone on my course pretty well, and it feels like a close-knit group, which really helps with the transition into uni.

Good luck with your application, please let me know if you have any more questions!
UEA Rep Rosie ☺️
