Tips for anyone thinking about studying a Games or Computing course

We asked our University of Staffordshire London students for tips for anyone thinking of studying Games Design, Cyber Security, Games Art and Computer Science.

Barbara, Games Art BA (Hons)
Try and learn at least Blender, which is the free modelling programme. That's one thing. Another thing you could try and study anatomy a bit because you're going to do a bit of actual traditional art. So, try to familiarise yourself with that because it's going to help a lot in the long run.

Jun Jun, Games Design and Programming BSC (Hons)
I would say get familiar with researching a lot, so a lot of the material out there is readily available and why not utilise it.

Subomi, Cyber Security BSc (Hons)
Come to some open days or some taster experiences. I feel like because I attended a lot of the open days I had an idea of what I was coming into. Another tip would be to research about Cyber Security.

Veronika, Games Art BA (Hons)
Just be creative. Just explore your vision on the board.

Charlotte, Computer Science BSc (Hons)
I think this goes for every course, but don't leave everything to the last minute. Especially with Computer Science, projects tend to take a lot longer than you think. And also, it's not really something like an essay where you can do it last minute because a lot of computer science is trial and error, so you've really got to plan it out at the beginning.
I’d add from a Computer Science perspective to try some basic coding before starting if you haven’t already, just to get familiar with how it works. And if you do have experience, definitely refresh your knowledge as it makes the transition into university a lot smoother!
