Do I have a chance at Russell Group Law Universities?

Hello everyone,

I’m a Y12 student who is planning on taking a gap year, I achieved 7766666664 in my GCSE’s.
I plan to go to Oxbridge and other Russell group universities like Durham, Bristol, LSE, UCL to study Law.

I would like some advice on wether this is actually possible because if I achieve AAA* in my final A-Levels, strong personal statement and extra curriculars with a really high LNAT score in the best possible scenario, would I have a chance at Oxford or Cambridge or any other of these Universities despite my bad GCSE results or are my GCSE results make or break.

Due to the timing of the application being October, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to resit my GCSE’s.

What do you think? Thanks

I don't know if this helps but Bristol and Durham rejected me with 32 on the LNAT and A*A*A Predictions probably because of my GCSE's which were 9988777666 - hope that helps you figure out where you want to apply and don't let that stop you

I see, if you don’t mind sharing. What were your 5 options and what university did you get accepted in?

Hi,

Yes, you still have a chance at Russell Group law universities, including Durham, Bristol, UCL, LSE, and even Oxford or Cambridge, but your GCSEs will be one factor among several rather than a deciding one on their own.

For Law, universities place heavy weight on A-level grades, LNAT performance, and your personal statement. Strong AAA/A*AA predictions, a high LNAT score, and strong supercurriculars can outweigh weaker GCSEs, especially where there is clear academic improvement.

Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, and UCL are more competitive and will scrutinise GCSEs more closely, so they become “reach” options. However, Durham and Bristol remain very realistic with a strong overall application.

In short, your GCSEs do not rule you out, but you will need to perform strongly across A-levels, LNAT, and your wider academic profile.

Kind regards,

Faith Ulaw Ambassador and Law MA Conversion student
