I recently got a part time retail assistant job at Primark. I'm contracted to work weekends, 4 hours each day and I have a few questions, any help will be much appreciated:

- The staff handbook says holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks a year starting in September. Does anyone know if this is for weekday staff or weekend staff or both? My allowance as I only started half way through the year until September is 4.5 days. I'm worried this won't be enough as I'm going to need 3 Saturday's and 2 Sunday's off in August for my summer holiday which is already booked. But I'll probably need other days off for university open days? Do you think they'll understand?

- Regarding references I've never had a job before so who do I put down? There is the option for 2 employers and 2 perosonal. I did work experience 2 years ago but I think the person who I was with has now left so do I just put it down anyway? For the two personal i could put my tutor and a long time friend? I don't know what else to do as this is my first job

- I'm going to need to change my Saturday shift to a morning or do all 8 hours on a Sunday when it comes to September due to starting year 13 and my final year of A levels which is really important. Does anyone know how easy this will be to change? I'm fine working 4 hours in the afternoon at the moment I guess even though I have my AS exams in 2 weeks but i think I'll manage until then. I can stay with the Saturday shift for my prohibitionary period (3 months), could I change after that do you think?

Thank you for so your time x

Well when i worked there years ago you get roughly 8 days off if you are weekend staff working 8 hours. You will need to ask whether you can have extra days off as im not sure.

Just put down your tutor and your friend can give a character reference.

If you need to change to a Sat morning you will need to put in a request in writing to your manager/HR also if you know when they are recruiting its worth giving the request to them then if they have a morning shift available so the new starter could get your shift but you might have to change departments if there is no shift available on your floor.

If you want 8 hours on a Sunday then that might be harder as i have never seen anyone work those hours on a Sunday only overtime staff. You can ask but i don't think its likely as everyone else will want to work a full day as well i know i would rather work 8 hours in one day then spread over two.
So you might want to cut down your hours from 8 to 4 and work overtime if needed instead.

Whys it the worst working on womenswear? And what do they ask from u to do on it?

Ive just started the job and got my induction soon

Its worst because it can be the busiest and messiest floor as there is a wider range of clothes for women. I remember going down to womenswear and seeing it look like a tip, clothes everywhere on the floor, having to put clothes on correct hanger and tidy it up, fitting room would get so busy and messy. There will be clothes everywhere if you work there.
So you would get a section either on tills, fitting room or shop floor so you could be folding, putting clothes on hangers or working in fitting room which is the worst place to be i had to cover there sometimes and thought if it was my permanent section i would have quit.

They'll understand and your allowance is a lot less, you'll find that you'll be allowed the days but it'll be classed as "unpaid leave" so you won't be paid for your holiday.

It's very very unlikely you'll get 8 hours on a saturday. Your contract won't say "8 hours over a weekend." It'll say "12-4" on Saturday and Sunday. (As an example you might be on a different shift pattern.) You probably won't be able to change this because lets be honest, no one wants to work on a Sunday. They will have already had so many requests to just do Saturdays...Also as a weekender you're contracted to work all the bank holidays as well (In case you didn't know =P)

Womens is constantly a mess. They have a bigger selection and it's impossible to keep it tidy.. You could be asked to be on tills, t-shirts, hanging, jeans, shoes, anything or you could be trained on all of it and told to go to which ever section needs the most help
