Freegans - surely this isn't right??

Hey just watchin an old episode of wife swap and one of the families are freegans. Now i dont fully understand what they are but from what Im seeing it isn't right.

The freegans in this program basically live in a mobile home, and scrounge for food from supermarket bins each night, the woman just said that jesus says you should sell all u have and give it to the poor. they dont pay any tax any national insurance etc etc but would use the nhs if they got ill. the poor son of this couple is embarrassed to tell anyone at school where he lives etc.

surely this isnt right?

just wondering if anyone knew anyone who believes in this?

or just what peoples opinions etc

i know a freegan and he doesn't do it to the degree you stated, he'll just ask for out of date food from shops, he won't dive into a bin at night to get it!

he also pays all his taxes and national insurance

also he lives in a rather nice flat, not a caravan!

freeganism is quite clever really, and I admire those who do it consistantly.

It is rather clever, the amount of money they must save on food bills is enormous i would imagine

I don't really see what's wrong with taking the unused food from supermarkets. They really should do something better with it than throw it away anyway.

I know obviously they are an extreme version picked for tv but this family are making it out like they are better than everyone else. They make out they are contributing to society and we dont. But i dont c where they are contributing??

I think it's a good idea, just so long as they keep their health in consideration with regards to food that is growing mould or has been in dirty place.

but why should we all pay for food and they just steal it?? supermarkets dont have much choice these days the laws on health and safety are so harsh etc.

It would amuse me quite a bit if someone stole from the bins at our supermarket (not that we have any, we compact everything, but say we did). Some of the stuff we've thrown away included milkshakes that looked perfectly harmless and were in date, but exploded when you picked them up, unless you were very careful.

Having worked in a supermarket, I don't think I'd ever eat food from the bins in supermarkets. The stuff they throw away is usually either out of date or hasn't been kept cold enough to be 100% safe.

Are you watching the program - from Co-OP there were chocolates etc. thrown away due to broken packaging, don't tell me that health & Safety had anything to do with that.

Yeah some of their beliefs are bizarre, it's quite clear to us that they contribute very little to society, but they must think they're doing us a favor by eating all that out of date food from bins

Interesting, having worked some-where which isn't a supermarket but sells food I would happily. When I worked there some days we would have to throw out 30+ sandwiches at a time, nothing wrong with them except they would be out of date the next day.

think nicking food from supermarket bins is almost a good thing, means there is less waste. saw a documentary on it ages ago and there were tons of things in the supermarket bins which had virtually nothing wrong with them. not paying taxes but intending to use the nhs obviously is unfair though.

I think I've seen this episode. (I think I've seen just about every episode :o: ) They get some craazy people on that programme

I think it's a bit of an extreme form of freeganism, looking at the other posts. Maybe they put it on for the cameras???

Ok, maybe thats not health and safety but how are they contributing by just stealing?? its the whole thing about they think there better by guilting everyone else. she found the dad a job with a recycling firm and he refused to do saying he worked for god. y shud he be able to use our nhs when he contributes nothing??

Omg I saw this! it made me lol, esp the bit when the posh mum actually starts crying because the gypo freegan child can get dental care for free.
Incidentally, I felt SO sorry for that boy. His parents are utterly selfish c*nts and wrecking his life so that they can live out some pathetic fantasy.
He should be taken into care, poor thing :frown:

Yep, they were just scroungers. True, the amount of perfectly edible stuff thrown away by supermarkets is totally deplorable, but the way they lived was too.

Again, poor boy.

Yeah when I worked in Co op , alot of the food we threw out was still edible. Specially bread. Only problem is what it might mix with in the bins.

Oh, things like sandwiches I probably would, as long as it was literally the date was for the day before. I presumed we were talking about meals and such, which os what makes the vast majority of our rubbish. I would say about 80% of our rubbish was food that was either a) damaged so wasn't sealed anymore (not things like chocolate, more yoghurts etc) or b) stuff which was out of date and needed refrigerating.

Yeah I mean you'd have to shop around in the bins for the good stuff  but there's definitely potential there. Poor Students..

The amount of good food supermarkets throw away is horrifying, when I used to work in one ages ago I was shocked at the amount that gets thrown away. On some days we'd literally throw a hundred or so loaves of bread out into the bin, there was nothing wrong with it at all and would've lasted another 4 or 5 days easily. Same goes with fruit and veg, plenty of perfectly good stuff just gets thrown away.

I think freeganism is a great idea, if super markets gave away what they were going to throw out we'd save a lot of space in landfill that's for sure.
