It's not a case of people 'managing' to get thirds. For some subjects (such as NatSci) you are measured and class in relation to other students, so the top X% get firsts etc. It means a certain percentage will get thirds, no matter what.
I can completely understand it, its not the same as the hoops you jump through at Alevel. University, particularly Cambridge, is damn hard work.
Ah OK, I didn't know there were quotas in place, do you happen to know if Cambridge use this system for Economics?
I really feel for all you poolees; a kid from my school who has no chance of securing a class above a II.ii was just given an offer.
I'm not exaggerating or being hateful, but Emmanuel are going to get such a shock when he arrives; I always wondered how those who could only manage thirds were admitted into Cambridge in the first place.
Is this the 'douche' you mentioned yesterday, or yet another person

Good lord , I didn't know that! Almost makes me glad I didn't get in. Seems a bit unfair surely? If you were in a particularly 'clever' year you could theoretically get a third when you normally would have got a first .
I got my rejection letter today (it was rather polite and kind), but I am sure I will get over it. I really loved cambridge but some things are just not meant to be. I hope those that got offers have a fantastic time, enjoy it! And those still waiting in the pool, hang in there!
Byeeeeeeeee...awwww it feels like the end of an era! lol Take care

They only do it in the absolutely massive subjects, a la Natsci, so it sorts itself out percentage wise apparently. I'm not a scientist and don't really know a lot about it tbh.
Although we've established that economists are not comparatively marked.

Aha, I guess thats ok then, still seems a bit odd though but I guess they haven't got anyone upon whom to decide what grades to give other than their actual students .
Got my rejection letter from Emmanuel today...ah well, it was inevitable, so I'm not too bothered. Durham here I come . Congrats to those with offers, and hang in there, those of you that are still waiting

Got the email back from Pembroke. Looks like bad news! Interpret it how you will, I think it means the end.
'Thank you for your email. We have now had all our files returned to Pembroke College that were not been taken from the Winter Pool and, unfortunately, your file is one of them. We are sorry that no other college was interested in your application and we shall be writing to you in due course'.

Ouch. Same fate for me then. I just wish they would hurry up and send me a damn letter.
