But for the more competitive courses (sorry i'm just making assumptions here- i'm sure Geography is competitive as well), you may need above 90% or you might not make the short list.

That's not true. Obviously it helps but it is by no means necessary. If your school is a good one where most people get As anyway then yes they probably would expect you to get higher UMS. And what's to say there's a shortlist?

It's also possible that your teacher just said that to make you all work harder. (I'm not saying your teacher is lying, but I've heard several stories like this before.)

Edit: Grades aren't everything. A levels is basically jumping through hoops and writing what they want you to in a certain way, university isn't like that. Getting good grades at Alevel doesn't mean you will get good grades at uni, as its a totally different system. Besides, I only got one A at Alevel, and not masses of A*s. On your account, shouldn't I be here? (I thought you guys liked me )
Rejection letter came through...Huzzah! Consoling my parents was a bit of a bummer but I feel quite light hearted about this whole Cambridge lark xD

Hi,
This is my first post, wanted to give something back to this thread because I've been watching it for a while and its been really helpful for me in terms of getting information. And everyone seems really confused about what's going on, so I made an account in order to share my info and hopefully be of help to some of you. So....

I go to a large, comprehensive state school. At GCSE I got 5A*'s, 3A's and a B. At AS I did English Literature, Philosophy, Maths and History and got 3A's and B (the B in history). My UMS marks were 255 in English, 242 in Philosophy, 247 in Maths and 215 in History. This year - A2's in English, Maths and Philosophy, plus finishing off an AS in Further Maths. Predicted 3A's and a B in AS Further Maths.

This year I applied for English Literature 2010 at Queens'. I did not, and still have not, received a letter form them, but on Monday 5th, my mum rang up while I was still at school and they told her that I'd been pooled. That afternoon, I got an email from Murray Edwards inviting me to an interview on Thursday 8th. The interview went very well, and I was told I would hear from them by the end of January. Today, at around 4pm, I got a phonecall from them, making me an offer. They said that the paperwork would take a week or 10 days to process but that they didn't want to make me wait that long.

In terms of the SAQ, I only tried logging in after my interview, and it said my application was no longer active. Today after the phone call, I logged in and it said "undergraduate pool."

Hope some of that's of any help to anyone. GOOD LUCK to everyone, not just with this but with uni stuff in general

Hehe, no it was a bad attempt at a joke because she said that she THOUGHT we liked her :p:.
I'm pretty sure that I've been rejected, having seen two people on this forum who were called today with offers for the subject and college that I was interviewed for and at, last Thursday.

I guess I'm disappointed but also feel liberated in some strange way... possibly due to waiting for so long, but I think also from the pressure put on me (inadvertently) by my family.

And good luck everyone who still hasn't heard, and congrats to everyone that got offers today!

Hey, guys. Sorry for all those who have been rejected! :frown: i feel so saaad...

I got a weird email from the college that reinterviewed me. They ask whether Id consider deffering my application until OCt 2010! does that mean they want me, and are willing to give an offer but for the 2010 academic year?
Yup! I'd take it I were you!

That's what it sounds like. :frown:

That's a tough choice to make if they do choose to give you a deferred offer.

I go to a good grammar school, so we are expected to get mostly A's (i don't mean to sound stuck up). But are you implying that if someone goes to a school where pupils achieve very high grades, Cambridge expects you to get higher UMS marks compared to an applicant for the same course who went to a school that doesn't perform so well academically? To support this arguement/theory/practice, i've read before (on the Oxford website- this was for medicine i think- can't remember), that they will look at the average GCSE grades that the pupils at the school you attended achieved and compare it with your results (presumably to see how hard you work/ how able you are). When deciding between two candidates with similar grades etc, they will also take this into account ( i also remember reading that they plan to do this- so i assume they don't do this currently:s-smilie: ).

And also, funnily enough, our teacher told us this whilst giving the grade boundaries for the test we did last lesson, before he handed back the tests. So yes, it was partly motivational talk for those wishing to apply to Oxbridge, but also, I assume, giving genuine the feedback that Cambridge sent.

And yes, i agree- grades are not everything.
