is it good or bad to be pooled but not automatically - i have been pooled with 10 A*s but without 90% in top 3 subjects - does this mean i am more/less likely to get another interview/ an offer? thanks

Anyone who is pooled has a reasonable chance of an offer - beyond that no-one can say. You can't be sure what category you are in - even if you think may have been auto-pooled you might be wrong! - so it doesn't help the stress levels to speculate about whether particular categories have a better or worse chance of success.

This is a tough process in which some people hit the jackpot and some don't. The bottom line though is that anyone who is pooled is of Cambridge standard - the problem is capacity, pure and simple - so even if it finishes up with a rejection, you can take credit for getting that far. Don't forget that there's another 8,000 or so people out there who got rejected outright.

:s-smilie: i am really sadjust got rejected from cambridge 4 economics to be honest i should have been pooled so disappointed .

gcse : 7A*3 a ( school with 40% pass rate )
as levels econ A maths B chemistry A politics B ( was extermely ill got medical certificates and mentioned in reference )
taking fm this year
interview - wnt good they kept on nodding and saying that was correct
tsa - went fine

they even said my ps was amazingly written and Work Experience was really good

knt make sense of this

Sorry to hear that you have not been pooled. My guess would be that the Maths B was critical. I know that you were ill. But even if Cambridge were generous and did not regard your AS grade as being a reliable indicator of your maths skills, that would still leave them with no reliable assessment of your maths ability. Which is a significant handicap to face when other applicants have (high) grade As and FM as well.

Do you have any other offers or active applications?

Ok, so my boyfriend applied to Corpus to do music and has been pooled to Homerton. He's had offers from Southampton, Bristol, York & is waiting on Durham. He's not sure if he wants to take Homerton because it's always been sold to him as a sort of 'dud' college (not to offend anyone please!) just that, because it's newer, it's not regarded as highly.

Basically, is Homerton that bad?!! Should he even consider giving up a place at Cambridge for one of the others?

To me, it sounds stupid that he's having doubts at all - Cambridge was always my dream and if i hadn't mucked up last year then i would have died for a place!

Any help/advice/whatever much appreciated

Let me sell you Homerton. (I'm not at Homerton, I should add).

Homerton has a reputation as a dud college because it used to be an education college. Until 2001 it was a teaching college- not a proper Cambridge College (it is still just an 'approved society' but it will be a college soon), where the 'Education' department was held and BA education was taught. In 2001, it started offering proper subjects (apologies to anyone who studies education, apologies, but if you're at Cambridge you should probably get a thick skin about the matter). Only recently (last year) did it begin to offer a full ranger of subjects. It's also a little out of town (half an hours walk), but that's not that much of an issue.

Historically, it's one of the more interesting colleges. It started out in Homerton in Hackney in the 1750's to provide a more modern curriculum (including Science, Philosophy and History) than the theology, classics and natural philosophy taught by Oxford and Cambridge at the time. In the 19th century, it became a college of the University of London and refounded as an Education College. In the mid-nineteenth century, it became mixed (100 years before the first mixed Cambridge College) and it was at this time that Leyton Orient Football Club was founded by members of the college. During the Industrial Revolution, Homerton became too polluted and students were dying of typhoid and TB so the College moved to the buildings of Cavendish College, Cambridge (a college which was founded for poor students but later closed due to lack of funds). Shortly after, it became all-women. It then became mixed (for a second time) in 1976 (one year before the first Cambridge women's college became mixed) and was recognised as an 'approved society' of Cambridge University, offering the B.Ed in Education. It began offering BAs in 2001.

Homertonians, in my experience are generally quirky, pretty laid back and friendly. The college is as un-traditional as they come (in spite of being older than some more traditional colleges). Even though Homerton is much more like an ordinary University than Cambridge, they still have Gowns and formals. Homerton has a very strong reputation for Drama and has pretty good sports too. Academically, it's less pressured than Corpus. The college is very pretty and has gorgeous grounds. The only people who see it as a dud college are people who's opinions are irrelevant. But, while it is one of the less popular colleges, in my opinion, Corpus has nothing on it.

This should be edited into the first post, in huge letters. :p:
Just a little question. So should all applicants who have been pooled know now? Both UK, EU, Int? Is it so that if you havent heard anything as of yet, you are definately not pooled? As I've read, some pooled people have gotten offers by phone know. I'm EU, and they should've called me or emailed me by now if I was pooled, right? Or?

Awesome!
Were you one of the lucky ones to get an email? Or was it a phonecall?

.. is this true?

Do they call you ONLY if you've been pooled and MADE AN OFFER from the pool? Or do they call you to inform you of being pooled...
Reply 636
They will call to tell you if you have an offer or another interview, you will get a letter (or email for int. applicants) about being in the pool itself.

Not necessarily. As you are not in the UK, they are unlikely to recall you for interview in any case. So far, out of about 100 people who have posted to say that they have been pooled, there've been 6 direct offers and 4 invitations to interview, received from only four colleges. If last year's statistics are anything to go by, and assuming the TSR group is representative of all applicants in the Pool, you would expect around 16 direct offers and 17 interviews, of which about half would get offers. We still have a way to go!

However, if you have not had a decision letter at all yet, it is reasonable to contact your college tomorrow - by email would be sensible and considerate - and ask for an up-date.
