I know what you mean! I had realised that i may have had to be re-interviewed, so I'd started revising (gap yr student), but I just couldn't because my head was all over the place. At least now I have some clear objectives to work for.

What do you know about Girton?

I've been trying to get on their site but it won't load...All I know so far is they have a heated swimming pool and its a little way further out than most other colleges...

Well I got an email from Girton at about 6 inviting me to interview for medicine next saturday

Wow nice one

Got pooled from Christ's medicine, and got a phone call from Fitzwilliam giving me an offer a couple of hours later (yesterday) which was nice. A surprise really because on the info sheet they said that offers without interviews was 5th-10th but i'm not complaining! It's not entirely what I wanted from a college but I'm sure I'll love it anyways.

Girton! Ooh pick me, pick me!

Girton's awesome. We have a swimming pool, college cat and a genuine egyptian mummy (named Hermione).

Girton was founded as the first women's college in Cambridge in the 1870s. It was also the first women's college to go mixed which changed it from being a severe, academic college to being a laid-back, friendly college. Most people agree it was an improvement. We are the only college to have a Mistress- a title that will remain even if a man is elected to the position.

The college itself is beautiful- it is Victorian but built in a neo-tudor/neo gothic style. We have amazing grounds with most sports facilities (gym, squash courts, sports fields, tennis courts as well as the pool) on site, woodland areas, a pond and a large array of wildlife (moorhens, ducks, rabbits and the famous Girton Black Squirrel). Girtonians have a reputation for being friendly and the college is one of the 'less pressured' colleges academically (I don't mean that euphemistically- the education is great but there is less expectation or pressure to perform placed upon you). Sportswise, we're average (though good cyclists) and there's plenty of drama and music to keep you busy.

The college is situated 2 miles (a 15 minute cycle ride or a 40 minute walk) outside Cambridge (actually outside the city boundaries but there are plenty of buses in and out) in the village of Girton. Girton Village is a largish suburb with a co-op, bike shop, post office and pubs. One of the things that may not be so obvious from outside about Girton is the sense of community. It really is a very friendly place.

Yeah I can't get on their website either, it must be down.

This is what I got form the alternative prospectus:
http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/prospective/prospectus/alternativeprospectus.pdf

If you ask anyone in Cambridge what Girton is like, they will almost certainly tell you that it’s a long cycle journey from the city. If you ask anyone who has studied at Girton, they would probably agree. However they would also add that life at Girton surpasses that of any other College. A friendly atmosphere is probably the defi ning characteristic of Girton’s vibrant community. It is both relaxed and unpretentious (yes,we’re allowed to walk on our grass). The College is one of Cambridge’s largest and has a good social mix with a large number of state school students. In the three years or more years that students are here, they become part of an extensive but close knit group.

The College is set in beautiful spacious grounds away from the milling tourists who are such an irritation to the students of the central Colleges. Girton also boasts all its facilities within the grounds, which is not the case at many other Colleges. All our sports pitches, gym, squash court, tennis courts and even an indoor, heated swimming pool are on site. It is hardly surprising that given this access to training facilities, Girton excels at a number of sports. Most of our teams are in the top divisions and many students go on to represent the University, whilst there are also a number lower level teams to cater for all abilities. And if sporting activity isn’t your thing, walking through the orchard or simply sitting by the pond would surely provide you with ample excuse to get away from your studies. Girton’s facilities extend far beyond sport. The College has a bar and common room which are popular after a hard day’s work and form the hub of the community. The same can be said for the canteen, which has a well deserved reputation for serving some of the best food you will fi nd in any Cambridge College. It is also a place where students from all years and subjects mix with academics and graduates, which makes it seem more like a giant family than a place just to work and live.

And if you would give up all these benefits for ten minutes less cycling in the morning, you should probably know that Girton’s secret is its second accommodation site. Wolfson Court is a self-contained annexe for second and third years that is situated within a stone throw of both town and the arts faculties. Alternatively, the College also off ers more independence in its houses, which are scattered about the Girton grounds. In short you will fi nd that Girton has something to off er any prospective student.

Choosing a Cambridge College can be a daunting task, given the variety and sheer number involved. Girton stands out by having the unique benefit of a strong community due to its location as well as offering the choice to live close to town in Wolfson Court. Before you apply, it is well worth making a visit to Girton and if you do it will definitely make your shortlist.

Sounds good to me!

I have a fun position.

Been pooled by Jesus for Modern and Medieval Langs.

Haven't got my letter yet btw, I found out because Fitzwilliam sent me an E-Mail today saying:

You already know that you have been entered for the Winter Pool
I didn't, but I do now, thanks!
We are impressed by your application and wish to invite you for interview.
Ok, that's nice of you...
But all our spaces for 2009 are taken, so this would mean if you are given an offer it will be for 2010 deferred entry.
Riiiight...wasn't planning on doing that.

So what do I do? I'm almost certainly going to go down for the interview but...I'm not sure I wanna take a Gap Year.

Go for it! I've taken a gap year and it's been awesome. If anything you could spend 6 months living abroad and perfect whichever language it is you want to study.

Ok. Well tbh it was a dumb question because if I got an offer from Cambridge for 2010 or 2011 or 2012 or whenever, I'd still take it!

What I'm thinking now is...is that unusual, for them to offer me an interview despite all their places being full up? I can't decide whether it means they want me really bad or all the other colleges just don't want me. Lol.

And also, if I decline the interview (which is unlikely, but I'm just curious), does that mean there's no chance any other college will offer me a place?

It's not unheard of for them to make such offers, just that they're full but they still think you're potentially good enough for a Cambridge place :yep:

I doubt you'd get an offer from another college if you turn this one down as the pool has already closed.

Good luck with interview

Tell me about it.

I have 6 in Jan, which is annoying because I'll have to end up doing a load more interview prep and travelling before they start...I think my first is Maths C3 on the 15th...

I live in Yorkshire which is a fair trek by train, and at such short notice it's gonna cost a bomb...
