Some quotes that made me laugh on Winter Pool guide :

the one hand we must try to be fair to all
applicants, and be seen to be fair by the outside world;

Each subject will have the following options when the two interviewing Colleges wish to offer a place to an
applicant:
a) a simple coin toss OR

It comes down to a coin toss! This is not a football match this is our lives your playing with! hmmmm... :sigh:

haha I read throught that whole guide laughing - I quite like the idea that they'd fight over a file though - I had visions of them both holding one end each and saying "mine" "no mine!" and it then falling apart spectacularly all over the floor and then someone saying 'oh well, no-one can have them now because you've broken their file" and then the admissions tutors fighting :p:

Haha! lol
A good analogy is like someone with chips from the chippie and they pick off all the nice juicy or crispy ones, get full and offer around, some chips are grabbed up and fought over, some are eaten though they aren't the juicest and all the others are the scraps no-one likes, the ones at the end with the big moles on them...

I am a small soggy chip :sigh:
Why is everybody being pooled trying to access their SAQ?
How does the SAQ come into anything?

You may be offered a place without any further interviews, I've been told

I suppose because it would show a college on there. Might give you an idea of who is considering you... Almost certainly not though.

agreed. Panic? Looking for signs...

Once I was "pooled" as they say in the business. We had a grapple for a while then I held his head underwater and he drowned.

We're seeing if there's any correlation between whether you can login to the SAQ and your application decision (pooled/accepted/rejected).

So far the hypothesis that pooled=can't login has been reinforced greatly.

oh ok, but wouldln't you be offered a place before the interviews take place if that was the case.

794 applicants last year were accepted through the pool, so not really 'very, very few'.

Okay, I just looked at the admissions statistics on the website, and it says that "one in five" who are pooled get an offer. Not as bad as I thought!

actually i think its even better than that. I think its 1 in 4.
I've been pooled for economics. 22 people from the pool got offers for economics last year; things aren't looking too hopeful!
It says here http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/statistics/explanation.html "Normally, around one in five applicants are pooled and, of these, around one in five receives an offer."

So it's about the same odds as you originally had of getting an offer overall (total applications:total acceptances is 5:1 too)

where did you get the info? is it from the statistics available on the cambridge website- because from there it doesn't look like many! do you how many people are normally pooled for economics?
http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/statistics/

It's all there. I highly doubt I'm one of the top 20ish pooled applicants, though.
According to the stats, 794/3174 got offers last year, which according to my calculator is almost exactly 25%. So 1 in 4 of us pooled people should get an offer =). And 64% didn't get interviewed of those that were made offers...

Oh, and I can't log into the SAQ either =)
Come to think of it, why haven't I been auto-pooled?
I've achieved 7A* and 90% UMS (or more) in 5 subjects.

If you applied to Christ's and got pooled, did it say so on the letter (oh, and I can still check my SAQ). :s-smilie:

If you look at the stats for Arch and Anth at my college (Pem.) there were two years where 12 and 11 applied, and 6 and 2 got offers through the pool - the other two years nobody got an offer. I just hope it's good year for me. Overall, therefore, my chances of receiving an offer from another college average out at 21.6%. LOL.

If that's the case then my theory is that you have either got another college interested in taking you up for an interview, or it is simply because you are in the auto-pool.
