Is it normal to have a really strong/loud heartbeat as when I was away my girlfriend commented on the loudness of it.

Better than a weak timid one which comes and goes.

You can easily get it checked out if you go to your GP. In fact I think it's possible to get a self-test kit. It might be worth it if you are concerned.

(Last time I did a joke like this ended up with a circle of people staring at me, literally :embarasse )

I was being serious, the last time my girlfriend was down was the last time I bit someone.

wasn't doubting your truthfulness... just thought it was rather funny...
felt like I shoud say something like:
"good for you! 3 whole months! I'm sure you'll soon get over your addiction, be strong and hang in there"

as long as you're not hearing it in your ears I'm pretty sure you're fine.

It's probably louder near your girlfriend because a) she'll be cuddling in, and b) naturally, your pulse goes a bit funny when you're in close proximity to a lurver.

The fact that she can hear it even when she does not have her head against my chest and is still quite loud even then.

And if I do?

the heartbeat will be so fast and loud that people might think you have a hi-fi system built in your body, and eventually it will explode like a firework...doesn't that sounds interesting?
