If anyone here had a firsthand idea of Bradford, be it good or bad, could you put down what you think? Would be nice to hear more opinions on it!
I live in Bradford!!!! Lived here all my life...what would you like to know?

Most uni halls don't allow girls on the ground floor...even in crime free places like Egham in Surrey (royal holloway)
There are girls here on the ground floor at Essex - though it is supposed to be a low crime area.

It's damn annyoing being on the ground floor and not really being able to open your windows.

I was going to apply to st.Andrews, but decided I wanted to do PPE instead of IR and therefore only applied to universities which offer PPE...

Completely agree with your views on Durham. I had my heart set on going there until I visited. I hated the college (St. Aidans), for many reasons. The rooms were the lowest quality of all the unis I applied to (although I was told they were to be 'upgraded' this summer) and the dining hall didn't appeal to me at all. The city itself was nice, but as you say, is not for everyone. Not much nightlife, and generally not a lot to do. It was also the lowest ranked for my subject, which I didn't find out until after I had applied.

It went from being my first choice to almost last, in less than a day.

lol, famous last words......
I hear in Tooting (st georges) girls aren't allowed to live on the ground floor of the student accomodation, because of the threat of rape.
I went to the SOAS open day last week and really regret taking mmy mum. She popped to the loos and nearly fainted when she saw all the rape alarms!
On that note does anyone know if the area really is that bad (islington / kings cross)?

I looked at York and Durham and discarded them because
1. They were too far north for me (also why I didn't even bother looking at scottish uni's
2. They seemed quaint and old, not the sort of place that I was looking to spend 3 studenty years in
3. OK, they were good for my course, but I didn't like the departments in either of them.

Discarded Reading because it was too agricultural based.
Discarded Southampton because didn't like the Science block, otherwise it was nice
Didn't even bother applying to city based uni's like leeds, birmingham, manchester, london etc, because I'm from a little island, with not a lot of crime at all, so it would be scary.
Sussex seemed very quiet, dead practically, with a huge emphasis on science, and not very many other subjects, so not a very good mix of people. Also, the accomodation was scabby.
Exeter - loved the place, the course was too physical for me though, marine biology etc, the course here is a lot more molecular.
Um, Nottingham was my insurance, but I wouldn't have gone there if I missed my offer, because as they were my insurance they completely ignored me, didn't send me any information at all about accomodation, living, etc, on the off chance that I would miss my offer. Also I know some people there that don't like it at all, but have also heard really good reports about it.

That's about it really.

(bit off topic but...)
Boldrewood (the biological sciences building) is halfway through being refurbished completely (and a nice new extension added to hide the main ugliness) it's a building site at the moment (as is the rest of the campus tbh...I'm getting fed up of drills but I will be happy when the new swimming pool opens in January and I like the new footpaths/speed bumps so I shouldn't really complain) but by this time next yr it's going to be at a much much better standard...about time too.

Yeah I remember them saying something about that, but tbh didn't fancy working in a building site for most my uni life (because building works always run on don't they?!) There's only a bit of building going on here, on the very far side of campus, so it doesn't disrupt very much.

I liked the look of the course, and the campus is pretty, at Kent at Canterbury but didn't apply there because it all seemed a bit sleepy.. Spent a long time in a cathedral city, want to go somewhere a bit different.

I spent a *long* time thinking about UCL. I loved the accomodation and the course and the location, so everything was perfect.. But I knew it would be a lot of pressure on me (it's v.v.v.v.v.popular for english!!) in interview. So I didn't apply there.

I didn't apply to Cardiff because I want to be based in the South-East (preferably in London). apart from that it's a nice area, nice uni, nice everything really just the wrong location for me.

Oh, didn't apply to Bristol because it's too close to home. If I was going to go there I may as well stay in Exeter and live at home (ok.. I know I'd be moving away.. just exeter/bristol isn't much of a leap. I'd be home every weekend knowing me!)

So basically the only reasons I didn't like places were location not being in south-east of england and because I was scared of competition. !

I was also considering applying to Durham.. but I heard a lot of horror stories- and both my Mum and my sixth form head talked me into applying to UCL instead.

To be honest the only reason I wanted to go in the first place was the thought of living in a castle!!

Don't tell my tutor but the only reason I put down Royal Holloway was the thought of living in the founders hall.

Hi, what subject is that for? Where else have you applied?
Well.. it's pretty isolated in Egham but you can get into central london in about 30 minutes (or so my bf tells me!!) I've not actually been to look around myself but the founders building is this massive old building that's just.. gorgeous. It's on the cover of the prospectus, and on the website (www.rhul.ac.uk).. I guess it's their big selling point so to speak (they are excellent academically as well though!) They have accomodation in the founders building, though it's in high demand so i'd probably end up in the skankier halls near by knowing my luck! There's also a gallery in the founders building and people get married there cos it's so pretty! You just have to look at the website to see.. it's just traditional. Something from american movies set in their universities as well!

It's quite nice financially I think, because it's considerably cheaper to live there than in central london but I've heard from ppl here that it counts as london with regards to student loans (which means you can get up to £4,930 as opposed to elsewhere in the country where you can get up to £4,000)

I'm really not sure where royal holloway ranks for music specifically, but overall it's a little lower than those other options according to the times.
