I didn't apply to Loughborough or Leicester because I didn't want to end up living at home. I didn't apply to York either because I'd heard it had quite a bad reputation for maths. Ended up applying to Leeds (obviously!), Hull, UEA, Brighton, Brunel and Exeter. I went to the Leeds open day first and was very impressed, and Exeter were asking for the same number of points, so I didn't even bother with the open day, just dismissed them immediately because I was really just looking for an insurance. Really didn't like Brunel, it just came across as very industrial, really pushing industrial placement years and lots of ugly brick buildings, and I think the maths department might've been up loads of stairs!

I thought I would really like Bristol when I applied there last year - but the Civil Eng dept was a dump, the guy who showed us round was so 'up himself' the halls appeared to be miles from anywhere, I quite liked the city though and the airport would have been very handy.

thats for music, ive applied to durham, cambridge, b'ham, not'ham and kings col, where would you say royal holloway ranks among them?
also is it expensive to live there-cos its close 2 london?
I applied there and was told it is the most expensive uni in the country to attend, because it is on the London commuter belt. Don't know if that's true or not...

There's also not very much to do in Egham...

Do you mean for 2004 entry?
I'm not sure about it being the most expensive, I would've thought it was more expensive to live in the centre of london - it's reasonably cheaper in egham (though you're right, there's not much to do!)

Also, you can get a London loan. So that's nice. I have heard Brighton (sussex) is more expensive seeing as you get about £900 less to live than in london, but the rent is pretty much the same as london prices!!

I was all set on applying to Leicester Uni, loved what I saw in the prospectus and was really looking forward to going to the open day to see it all for myself.

When I got there however i just really didn't like the place. Maybe it was the fact I was on my own in a strange city and everyone else just seemed so snotty (when I'm sure they really wern't) I dunno.

I can't really explain why I didn't like it, I just didn't feel comfortable there and couldn't imagine myself living in the city or the student accomodation.

I guess it's probably a really great place in term time and some people have a ball there but somehow, and I can't put my finger on why, it just didn't feel right for me for no obvious reason.

It was strange and a bit of a let down, I thought about just applying and hoping I liked it once I got there and met new people etc but it in the end I didn't. I thought it would be best to just follow my gut instinct.
I still don't regret not applying......yet.

I was considering Oxford Brookes as my insurance choice for English. They wanted ABC so I thought it would be a good insurance. I went and the facilities are really good. Great lecture theatres great accommodation etc. But i decided against it. First because I thought people would think that I was trying to pretend that I went to an Oxford University, 2nd because of the cost of living it is very expensive compared to where I actually ended up and 3rdly because I thought they were trying a bit two hard. They seemed to think they were better than the Oxford colleges and I'm not saying that they are crap but academically they are not even in the same league.
I also ironically because I ended up here, rejected Sheffield for English because i was worried about living in a city and the crime rates. Now I'm here it really isnt that bad!

i wish i'd gone to more open days before ia ctually applied to uni. The only one i went to pre appliction was to cambridge for a sutton trust thing and southampton cos it was the closest uni to me. I didn't end up appying for wither. For some strange reason despite loving cambridge i applied to Oxford. Can't even remember why now. It's strange though how mcuh we all base our applications on the prospectuses which are all obviously glorified.

Did anyone actually see all of their uni choices before or after application? cos most of my freinds didn't even go to any.

I went to Birmingham, Wolverhampton (just incase I really ballsed up my A levels), Aberystwyth and Oxford Brookes before i applied. I ended up at aber. But most of them were the summer open days they have before you even apply. I actually applied to Aber, Oxford Brookes, Birmingham, Sheffield, Swansea and Leeds. So I visited 3 out of 6.

My experiences of the oversized toff population at The European Youth Parliament Finals UK in York made me realise that I could gain some knowledge for when it came to making my final Uni choices. I asked all the people who I obviously had nothing in common with (I don't own a pony, my Dad didn't buy me a Jag for my 17th and I don't have a butler called Edgar etc etc) which Unis they were applying to. This became a sort of mathematical experiment between myself and the other members of my school who went and our top 3 Unis, with the exception of Oxbridge, NOT to apply to are as follows:

Durham
Bristol
Warwick

And that's right...I didn't apply to any of them.

From what I know about it Bradford uni isn't as bad at is reputation. It's managment school stands out from the rest and it on a totally seperate site to the rest of the uni.
I have never actually visiited the uni but I know someone who lives in the town and loves it - it's very cheap to eat/live/go out there and rent is very cheap. The city's a lot bigger than you would imagine.
It isn't the smartest city and you can certainly tell its in yorkshire but I definatly wouldn't say it's as bad as some people say it is. A lot of asians there - not really a bad thing I don't think, it will give you the oppertunity to meet people from other cultures etc.
Because it isn't that popular (although I think things are getting better for them) the entrance requirements are lower than they normally would be for a uni of that standard i think - which could be good.
The only thing it really suffers from is its reputation and how employers view the uni - which although isn't to good at the moment I think is improving and for Business and some other causes in which it is a centre of excellence I know it has a good rep.

Hope this helps a little........but as I say I have never actually visited the uni itself although I was interested in it a while back so your maybe best asking someone who has been there/visited.

I haven't applied to any London Uni's as they are too close too home so if I did go to one I'd have to live at home due to the expense. This would be a problem for me as I see a great part of the uni experience as learning to be independent.
I also got a place last year at Exeter but although I really liked the place I was put off at the open day by the head of department talk. He kept referring to it as a 'finnishing' school and how people say it is and 'it's true' to call it that. Made me feel it was a little to snobby to be honest... although all the students seemed very nice

*Sits waiting for abusive replies. Lol.*

I am not applying to any London universities for the following reasons because they're too far from where I live, too cramped, crowded, horribly busy and in general an ugly hectic place to be.
Oi that's my home city you're ****ging off, it's the best place on Earth!!!

And don't worry about the too far bit, I'll put you up

I've applied quite blindly in truth, as the only uni I've applied to which I've actually been to is Cardiff, where a mate is in uni already doing the same course as I want to do.

The unis that I was going to apply to were all too far away to visit - Southampton, Royal Holloway, Reading, Exeter, so I've gambled.

I don't know why but I've got a feeling I might regret not applying to Royal Holloway I think I would've enjoyed it there.
