York: BA in Writing, Directing & Performance

Hi!

I've been offered a place, without interview, for 2009 entry. The trouble is that I don't know much about the course- does anyone know anything about it? I'd be very appreciative

Thanks in anticipation,
Luce

Hey, I'm in the same position as you...been offered a place without interview but don't know too much about the course. The visit day should be interesting. Apparently last year there were only 30 on the course so I'm quite suprised they are giving out some places without interview!

These are the only people I've heard from apart from a visit day to RHul and it's really bugging me.

I want an interview at Bristol dammit!!!! When did you hear from them?

And where are your favourite unis then?
And also (sorry for alll the quizzing!!!) when did you send out your form?

Haha don't worry, it's nice to speak to people going through the same process! My form was originally processed by UCAS on 29th October. I got my interview letter from Bristol on 12th December. But as they don't interview many people it doesn't mean you won't still get an interview. If you've heard nothing then that's a good thing as they are still considering you for one. I think the Bristol course is the best suited for me and I loved the place when I went there. My only concern is they did really badly in the student satisfaction polls for drama last year :-s . I like the fact that York also focuses on film and television as well as theatre (as does Bristol). York's plans for development also looks really good...the drama department are going to have some amazing facilities. So I think its between Bristol, York and Warwick for me.

Hello I've got my interview for this course next Thursday and I'm scared. :s-smilie: Does anyone know what sort of things they ask you? I'm worried about taking in my written work too because I dropped performing arts at AS for various reasons so I don't have a lot. I want to take in some creative writing, but it's from GCSE, does it matter?

It's nice talking to people in the same situation.

I haven't got a clue what they ask you, since I didn't have an interview however I've only done drama to GCSE level and have continued English Lit to A2... I don't think dropping PA will matter atalll- what other subjects do you do?

Good luck love!

Eng lit, geog and history. Yeah, it's on my application that I don't do it anymore so they obviously don't mind.

Eeeek this uni business is a stress isn't it?

Totally and completely! Gah!

WHere else have you applied?
I only hold this offer currently, plus an interview (which I hear everyone gets?) at Royal Holloway...

Do you know much about this course? Did you go to the open day? I know very little :frown:

I've had offers from Kent and Aber, this is my first interview  . I've been to York, but it wasn't for this course. This course is just what it says in the title, it explores different careers in performing arts and not just acting, have you got a prospectus? Every other uni I've applied to it's for a joint honours in drama&theatre and film&television. This course looks similara and it seems they have good facilities.

I'm waiting to hear from Manchester and St Mary's University College in Twickenham. Come on you two! lol I really liked the look of Royal Holloway, but they didn't do the joint honours. :frown:
I've also been offered a conditional place on this course, without interview! I'm not sure if I'll accept yet, I've been auditioning for drama schools and so obviously I'm waiting to see what happens there. Does anyone know about what the graduates from the course have gone on to do? I mean in terms of, how many of them are working in thetre/diretion/television?

Well the course itself is a very new one...it only took its first intake this year (2008 entry), so there aren't any graduates as such. However, the equivalent MA course has been running a bit longer and the degree has been adapted from a joint BA in English, Writing & Performance (which started in 2000). I'm not quite sure what graduates have gone onto do from that, but the course was apparently very highly ranked. There is a lot of development going on - a whole new department is being made with very good equipment and spaces (two television studios, recording studios, post-production facilities, cinema, rehearsal rooms). That will be open by the start of teaching in Oct 2010 (so the second year of the course). My concern with the course is obviously that it is so new and hasn't had time to properly establish itself. However, it does seem they have good links (they often do masterclasses with people from the industry) and the course looks very rounded in my opinion. Saying that, the newness of the course is what is putting me off having it as my firm or insurance.

My interview want horribly  . Didn't get offered a place :o: , but not too fussed because it wasn't my first choice.

I know he was doing it delibrately, but the man kept disagreeing with everything I said and was starying to get befuddled. At one point he asked for my opinion on a play, I started to give it and he just started shaking his head saying "no no" then went on to something else. :s-smilie:

Not to put anyone off though lol, you'll, probably be better than I was.

First of all - I'm from Poland. It explains a lot - especially my mistakes  Well, I've also applied to York and still haven't recieved an offer. I want to take a course where directing is a main part & I haven't got a slightest idea which one will be the best. I regret that I didn't choose London school of arts but it's too late  The worst thing is that every universities seem to ignore me because of some difficulties which I can have with appearing at the interview.

If he's the head of the department, then yes. He is the biggest name-dropper/random theatre-storyteller in the world, and I wouldn't feel bad if he seemed to disagree with you. Most people have no idea what he's talking about most of the time

lol, I remember him talking about Alan Ayckbourn as just "Alan".

Still, I was quite bad lol, I'm not just saying it was him.

He has Einstein hair!! Love it

Umm I'm having a bit of a dilemma... York W, D + P is my firm choice, but I got through to the last round for acting at RADA (only to be told last wednesday I didn't have a place). I don't know whether to go with the sensible option (York) or have a gap year and try again for drama schools. I know York is a fantastic course, but getting so close to RADA has made me question which path I should be taking. My parents are wanting me to go to York, but I'm so worried that I'll start the course and just disappoint everyone - help!!

How's everyone else feeling?? xxx
