Weird Sound In My Ear

Okay, this is a really weird problem I have, yet I have no idea what it is.

For quite sometime now (around two years actually), I hear this weird sound in my left ear whenever I am in a loud classroom, corridor, concert, wearing my earphones while listening to music; infact, any loud place in general. It is really hard to explain, the closest I can think of is like the sound coming out of a "torn speaker" :s-smilie:, like wind whistling through some torn fabric.

It is a real pain in the neck, (in the ear actually  excuse me for my pun, couldn't help myself), seriously, it is like everyone is having a great time fooling around in the class and I have to shut my ear to stop this irritating noise. Makes concerts hell for me, and I can't even enjoy music on my iPod anymore.

I am really concerned. Is my ear drum damaged? Am I heading towards hearing loss? Is there a way to fix this?

Any serious help would be appreciated. Thanks.

im not sure by what you have explained it could be tinitus which is a constant ringing type sound?

If not i would go to the doctors they may be able to refer you to an audiologist if it is something worth investigation.

To me i think seeing a doctor is the best option here
Was there any trigger to this noise? a knock to the head?

It is definitly not tinitus (actually I have that too, but I have heard there is no cure for it). But yeah, it's not tinitus.

I am kinda embarrassed to go to the doctor...What if he thinks I am bluffing? Has anyone ever experienced such a problem?

why'd he think you were bluffing? we don't all think our patients are lying

its easier seeing someone who knows you're medical history really..go see a doc, could be the best thing you'll ever do
perforated ear drum?
Go to the doctor, they won't think you're bluffing. My parents thought I was joking when I said I couldn't hear very well after a knock on the head... I'd lost over 90% of my hearing :p:!

perforated ear drum?

OMG. Could this be true? :/

I admit, I feel I have tad poor hearing in my left ear at times, but that might just be paranoia.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you had a perforated ear drum your hearing would be severely hampered. If its not, then you probably don't have it.

Thats what I'm thinking anyway...

EDIT: maybe he's right though, if its a really tiny hole.

I guess I will try to get an appointment, but any input until then would be priceless.

"We"? Think you're a professional already? :p:

No one can sit here and diagnose you. If you're concerned see a GP.

But why don't you think it's your tinitus showing itself (was your tinitus ever actually diagnosed?)

Tinnitus is like a ringing sound in the ear, normally in the absence on any background sound. I do experience this ringing sound when I am in a quiet or an almost quiet environment. The sound I hear is different from the ringing sound of tinnitus, totally different infact.

It doesn't have to be a ringing (although it usually is). It can be a buzzing, clicking, "whoosing", roaring or even beeping noise.

The British Tinnitus Association has a sound file on their website so you can hear the range of sounds that someone with tinnitus may experience

http://www.tinnitus.org.uk/

(Hear what tinnitus sounds like)

But see a GP, that's the only way.

Thanks for the link, I checked out the clip.

Unfortunately, though I found a match for the sound I hear due to tinnitus, I was unable to find one for the one I am experiencing.

I find it hard to explain, but it is like wind passing through a torn fabric, a broken speaker or something. Damn it's hard.
I have something that sounds remarkably similar. It's like a crackling noise when there's generally loud noise, and then a sort of echo/reverb sound if there's a loud bang or slam noise.

I'm yet to go to the docs - it's hell getting an appointment, but it won't stop me - I'm not embarrassed, that's what GP's are there for.

Oh yes finally someone!

Do you experience it in both ears? When do you normally hear it?
Nah, only my right ear. It's only if there's a sudden loud noise, or if there's someone shouting in the vicinity. It's blood irritating lol.

Can I have some more views?
Is it like a whooshing sound in your ear?
