its totally wrong to give up a social life just to get slightly higher grades. seeing people at the weekend is what keeps you sane.

Out of interest why do you have pictures of Tory leaders as a sort of pictorial signature thingy? Are you really that proud? I can understand Margaret Thtacher - sick f**cking b**ch - but at least had admirable qualities if your politics is that twisted. Now William Haig and IDS, even if I was the most loyal right wing Tory, I would prefer to forget.

They should be expelled then i'll report them, university is a place of work not debauchery! Filth, I'll get them kicked out of university they disgust me. I also despise being called someone who indulges in anal intercourse and sad, why am I sad? Just because I work hard, people like you really annoy me. But then I seek comfort in the thoought that you are simply jealous of my abilty and intelligence.
You cannot report people for having sex or drinking...if they are over 18 they are legally adult and can do both things without any fear from their university (who to be quite honest really couldn't care less what their students do so long as they do their work well).

What is wrong with our generation? In victorian times people would be depsised for behaving like this debauched generation. People only care about shagging, drinking, drugs etc. Debauched filth. When i'm at university in the halls anyone acting in debauched ways will be reported if I hear or see it to the Dean.

And no i'm not "having a laugh" i'm sick and tired of it. It disgusts me it really does. I am a respectable hard-working student I am sick and tired of people undermining mine and others intelligence due to their own jealousy and insecurities.

umm - do you even know what a dean is? trust me when I say that they really couldn't give a damn about what happens in halls of residence. You might try reporting these things to the hall manager or residential warden but it's unlikely they will take any action unless something illegal is occuring. And reporting people for doing things that are legal is more likely to get you thrown out of halls as a disruptive influence.

You're right I hate the tories too, especially Thatcher she was an evil cow through and through. The tory party should be blown up along with Bush's and his republican pigs.

Your complaining that people can't accept your a hard working student but then you cannot accept that people are allowed to do whatever they wish, that's the day and age we live in. People would respect you more if you said 'I'd prefer to work harder than spend a lot of my free socialising, however I think people should do whatever they wish as it is their own lives'.

Yes the Dean is like the head for uni. I don't know much about the admin type set-up structure for university, perhaps I'll find out when I start. But anyway, i'll report them to the appropriate uni authorities.

You're another gullible brain-washed fool. Open your eyes, Oxbridge hasn't changed much internally (maybe in the way the display themselves to the public, but thats just a smoke screen) and they probably never will! Let me guess you are very posh, only very posh upper-class people defend Oxbridge. Their system stinks and is riddled with corruption. I am still applying to go to Cambridge though but I already know i'll be discriminated against. I have the predicted grades (I will get them with ease) if they reject me then I will be really annoyed and will complain about it to the appropriate authorities. But it's worth I try I suppose.
With an attitude like that then yes, theres a good chance they wont take you. If you think in so negative a manner then you might as well not bother.
By the way, I'm an Oxford student who's involved with the applications side so I have a better idea about the process then you.

The point is. That good grades get you into good universities. The really good universities encourage you to be intelligent people (not just the type of person who achieves good grades, but the type of person who really thinks). You have to get good grades to get there so it's kind of roundabout but it makes sense. They set something of a foundation for real intelligence to develop.

But they aren't the be all / end all.

Jesus mate, calm down!

Your tone really conveys the impression that you are the one who is jealous and embittered.

I know you say you are really clever, but dear me you are very confused about these issues. The title of this thread is fundamentally flawed "what is the point if grade's don't represent intelligience?". I do not believe that grades have ever represented inteliigience. There is a correlation in terms of the fact that a certain level of intelligience is required to be able to achieve highly but so much more is required than raw intelligience. I mean Einstein did rubbish in most of his exams, I suppose he is stupid! Contientousness, dedication to subjects and so fourth contribute enourmously to what grades you get. I have met manier hard worker who have top grades but are no geniuses. Yet they deserve their grades all the same, because a-level grades are in my opionion indicitive of contientouseness, and to an extent rightly so.

You may well get into the best college at the best uni with the best a-level grades, and then of course you can pat yourself on the back. Well done you can say to yourself as you sit in your room. But when you are there at last and you have this piece of paper that has four As on it, one can't help but think what will happen to you then.

Surely somewhere along the line, your egotistical pursuit of high grades will have to come to an end, it will have to be a question of what you are passionate about and what is important to you. You will not become the become no would reknowned scholar with a narrow minded attitude like your own. Your comments seem to reek of the same ignorance and prejudice you are keen to point out in others. Is your life really all about grades? I'm pretty sure it doesn't all stop once you've got into university, maybe one day you'll take having fun a tad more seriously... Anyone whats wrong with drugs and drink. What's wrong with shagging, a fair few intelligient people have been pretty keen on those things. I suppose some people like yourself, don't consider poests, novelists or artists in general to be "intelligient". I swear the library is full of writers into their drugs, drink or sex (like evryone) take one of the greatest poets ever Samuel Taylor Coleridge, need I illlustarte with examples? Do you somehow believe that intelligient people are removed from the natural desires of all human beings. Use your supposed intelligience to question these things, is sex really futile in all its forms? Is drink? Is not purely intellectual activity on some level futile in all its abstraction. I think your scared to ask these questions, thats why your so angry.

Heres a nice quote to indulge your mamoth intellect in:

"Philosophy is at one the most sublime and futile of human disciplines"

Take philsophy to mean intellectual activity in the broadest sense.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you should get out more, reallly and truly man just have some fun - you never know you might like it

Thanks for your condescending tone and narrative. And I had already come across the quote you have stated when I was around 7 years old. In my case philosophy (intellectual activity) is the most sublime discipline when applied to my brain, because my brain makes great use of it due to my intrinsically intelligent nature.

I am a respectable, hard-working, highly intelligent student who is going places. I do not need to indulge in debauched activities just because everyone else does. I might not have a life and loads of friends and 'shag' loads of women and take drink and drugs, but at least I might change the world one day with my intelligence and contribute something to humanity. That is all i'm bothered about, I don't want friends and have a vibrant social life because I don't need it. This is no proirity to me it is utterly useless, all I need is my brain which is of superior intellectual abilty to most. I relax by playing games, reading and enjoying art and film. This is all I need I am happy with this. Maybe one day I will become an eminent academic who has made important contributions, in fact, not maybe, DEFINITELY! I will get the last laugh.

To be honest you have a snobby attitude. You think that you are better than everyone who doesn't share your views on only working hard and having little social life. I think you'll find there are many people who do balance both social and education lives and there are people who do and are more intelligent that yourself. You won't be having the last laugh, you have an unhealthy attitude towards people and consequently could find yourself alone in years to come and also you will be able to do little contributions in some areas as of your lack of social communication. I still stick to what I've said, it is up to the individual how much they wish to work but you really do see insecure and you seem to motivate yourself on imaging yourself being better than other people.

i think its pretty pathetic that some people in here dedicate their lives to getting grades, and have no life. why cant u have both? there is such things as being clever (yes, grades do prove that you have natural intelligence COMBINED with a good work ethic) aswell as having a social life, but at a reasonable level. uni's want people who will contribute to uni society, aswell as having the intelligence to do well.
Example, RAHAYDENUK is a complete geek with no life, he got 6 GRADE A'S AT A-LEVEL, yet cambridge told him to go away.
edders: he didnt apply to cambridge, he wanted to go to IC and thats where he is now
I thought Richard applied to Cambridge.

@ those who think school is everything.... ahahahahah

Fair enough you may be more successful in your career, but when you're a complete introvert with no friends, you will be miserable.

Lighten up, get out the house... have a beer.

Admit what? Involved in what? You show little clarity. I'm involved in access work in Oxford so I'm aware of the relevant statistics and also the target schools programme, the funding situation and so on (Pencil Queen could probably be more comprehensive then me though). You should have used the opportunity to ask for me help, but sadly for you that ship has sailed!
