Drove the B&Q today to buy a bottle of mineralised methylated spirits, the wifey at the till asked me for ID, ok I hand her my driving licence. After she stuggled to work out im 18 she says sorry you need to by 21. I didn't think this could be right then she showed me a message on the till saying "check buyer is at least 21". So I drive to focus and got it instead. I did a quick google and found this.
The Methylated Spirits (Sale by Retail) (Scotland) Act 1937 (the 1937 Act) which controlled the sale of methylated spirits and surgical spirits in Scotland was largely repealed in 1998. However, section 1(2) which prohibits the sale of methylated spirits to any person under the age of fourteen still applies.
That's a dumbass cashier, did you ask to speak to the manager? Maybe you should do it again and kick up a fuss now you know the law.
The cashier pointed to a message on the screen saying check buyer is over 21 when I queried it. At first I thought it was that challenge 21 thing where they ask if you look under 21, but it did say check buyer is >21
B&Q are quite free to sell their products to whomsoever they fancy. Perhaps it's a matter of policy, insofar as they do not want to be seen selling meths to kids.
They are a pain in the backside, when they have argued in the past I've normally retorted with the 'well I'm over 18, also buying a ton of paint, wood, screws, and nails, do you really think I'm going to all this effort to get methanol poisoning'
Normally they concede, it helps if you put on the more educated of accents, or go in dressed in a boiler suit covered in paint.

well if this makes you feel better, my mate got ID'd to buy a U rated film from sainsbury's for his brother. He didn't have ID so they couldn't sell it him, we were like 'pfft. Are you over 3 years of age sir?'
I'm sure I got meths for D of E when I was 16 without any hassle, guess it looks like B&Q policy? I do remember one crazy place aages ago where I could buy a 12 rated video but not a PG because the cashier was convinced if you were under 18 you needed a parent there to buy a PG...
If you get caught selling anything in B&Q to someone who shouldn't have it (By B&Q Policy) You will be fined something in the region of £5000. This applies to Managers as well as Cashiers.

It wasn't that fact that I didn't have ID, I wouldn't have been bothered then anyway. The idea of the post was to find out if its just a policy b&q have, because as far as I know you don't have to be 21 to buy meths.
I worked for a B&Q a while back and nearly all age restricted products would come through the till as 21+, occasional it would say 18+ for silly things like Christmas crackers but not often. I can't remember whether it was policy or not now (think it was) but I do remember the system being pretty strict and being told we could refuse sale of products to anybody regardless of age and particularly items such as solvents and glues. To be honest I don't remember actually having to ask many, if any for i.d. since the majority of customers were often obviously older e.g. home owners, builders etc and I only worked part time. It was a while ago that I worked there so it may be even stricter now. Sounds like the cashier may have been pretty harsh in your case though. I look pretty young myself and hate getting asked for i.d. I find it quite embarrassing especially if there is a queue and everybody is looking down at me as though I'm trying to buy something I shouldn't.

So why do B&Q say you need to be 21?
Belt and braces.
Financial penalties are high for braking the law, therefore a lot of businesses will. Add extra safeguards to ensure they don't get caught out.

Age discrimination is fine as far as the law is concerned. It's just another part of modern society.
