disadvantages of job seekers allowance(good advice=possible+rep :D )

hey guys. I am 19. I plan to go to uni/higher education this september. Right now i am seeking a job. I am signed up to do medical trials(haven't done one yet, probably do one in Jan/Feb). My friend just told me about the allowance today, i want to get it untill i get a job(which could be a month/month half). However i remember when i signed forms some ask "have you ever received allowances e.g job seekers, disabled etc. So i am just worried that if i get an allowance now, it may affect my loan for my high education later.

If not, what does the allowance affect in the future? what hassle, pain could it cause me? i am only 19 and i want to maintain some manuverbility in my life. I don't want to go for an interview or fill out a form for something and get rejected because i might get 200 pounds.

good advice=possible+rep
Im currently on JSA as im looking for a job but there is NOTHING area :frown: And i have to financially support myself.
However, as far as i know, it does not affect your availability for loans etc. That just depends if your living with your parents, their income etc

JobSeekers Allowance is totally independant of all other government loans and grants. You can apply for JSA, and you can also apply for a student loan come April, and it won't affect it at all. The whole point of JSA is to give you some money 'to live on' whilst in the transition of one job to another, it's not a direct replacement for a job, so whilst you are looking (which you are) get yourself signed on. Also, to save you some time, give them a call first, on 0800 055 6688 to do an over the phone interview, then they will send you off to your local JobCentre to finalise the application and get you signed on.

And the Allowance doesn't affect anything of your future, you don't have to give anything up, you won't get a bad credit or anything along those lines, so nothing to worry about.

Good luck in your job hunt

You cant claim it while you're in uni, cause you're in Full Time Education

... I may be wrong tho, 90% sure
^^ You're right.

Anyone know how quickly you start receiving money after you've applied and had a phone call with them? Do you have to meet someone face-to-face first?

The general procedure is firstly a phone interview, then they will arrange an interview time for you to go down and sign your papers/provide your ID at your local JobCentre. Once this is done, You can expect to wait up to 1-2 weeks for the first payment, as it works in arrears, however the payment gets backdated to the day you first made the enquiry about it.
Cool thanks, I submitted the online application today
hmm looks like I can get it then.

Ill wait a couple of weeks until im 18 though to avoid complication
but it also requires you to provide evidence that you have applied to like 4 jobs in 2 weeks
ppl give me some reps for letting you guys know about it ;-)
loooooooool
so if in june when i leave compulsory school or whatever its called until september when i go to college can i claim then? Theres no jobs anywhere, been looking for 4 months :frown: I'll be 16.
