Yes, if u don't tick that u prefer a single room then u r more likely to get one of the town centre ones. There are shared rooms which they put first years into in the older, more central halls. Tick for standard, catered, small halls and I would say that wld give u the most chance.
Sharing is not too bad at all. Me and my roomie aren't best friends but we still get on well and I haven't found it a problem. It's occasionally inconvenient, tiptoeing around when they're in bed already etc, but that's more than made up for by the location. I think the small central halls are generally friendlier too.

thanks for that advice, ill try it. Which halls are you staying in? I really like the look of St Sally's and McIntosh

I'm in John Burnet, otherwise known as Atholl. Very friendly, social hall. Sallies and McIntosh are in great locations. Specially McIntosh if u have classes in the North Haugh science buildings (which u do with Psych- we have classes in Physics A at 12).
