Applying through UCAS to a university, when I am already a student at a different uni

I just found out that UCAS actually allows to apply to a university (A) while already being a student at the university (B).
So how does it work?
Once admitted to the university B, I just tell the university A 'sorry - I longer want to be your student; I found somewhere better'.
Is that how it works?
I erroneosly thought, up until now, that one has to actually cease being a student in order to apply somewhere else.

Yes, you can apply to another uni...

No, you don't have to stop studying and then apply to another Uni through UCAS...

I'm in uni right now (just started classes today again) and I have two unconditionals... So, perfectly fine.

But you should inform your current institution, so your tutor can give you a reference.

I think it's okay to use your old reference as well if you can get a copy of it and your old referee knows you're using it. But it's better to get a new one, I guess.

I was going to do the same thing but I realised I'm not unhappy enough with the uni, as in it was just a phase.

yeah, it's what I'm doing. my current uni don't know, and I'm not going to tell them until I get an offer from somewhere else.
OhNO!

Did you end up using your old reference then, out of curiosity?

That's good. What uni do you go to out of curiosity?

I've had things turn for the better here in a lot of respects so now I don't really want to leave. To be honest a lot of it was to do with the course, but my dad explained to me that a lot of 'technical' courses (mine has a crapload of linguistics so can be included in this) start out awfully and then get much better. So I'm thinking of sticking it out.

The ref my English teacher gave to me was pretty bad also - described me as "beginning to exhibit independent ideas and good vocabulary"... pfft, ended up getting full marks on both of the exams after being predicted a B ¬_¬

To the OP - you only have seven days to sort out your application so I'd get on it *fast*.

I'm at the University of Surrey.

I missed living in the city because i came from London and the town feels too small! Also, i've had bad luck with flatmates which is a pain, but c'est la vie.

I come from London originally too and even Cardiff feels tiny to me in comparison. Just realised I'd rather live here now I've settled rather than going back to London and being torn away from what I've found here... kind of a dilemma I guess. Thing with my flatmates has gone bad too, but guess it's only until June.

Going to stop hijacking the thread (I'm on PM and things as always).

You can either use your old referee or get someone from your current institution to write one. As long as your intentions are outlined somewhere, there's no reason you can't apply to other universities. And the reason isn't necessarily because you found somewhere 'better' either; students choose to leave universities/drop out of universities altogether for a number of reasons, e.g. location.
do you think that applying this late (with only 7 days to go) lowers our chances of getting a place? Or do they give you an equal chance as someone who applied in October??

How does it work with references etc?

When i applied to uni from school we had a 'buzzword' which we had to log into ucas with and from this our school could right references and put predicted grades etc on. does this mean we will have a buzzword for our uni?

who writes our reference? our tutor??
