Blue or Black Ink

Hi Guys

Just a question, this may sound a bit silly, but today I had 3 exams. And I wrote the first one in black ink, and the second one in blue ink. I started writing the third exam in blue ink and an invigilator came up to me and want crazy and was like you have to write in black ink! You must!

The rubrick didn't say anything especially about ink colour, and when I sat most of my A-Levels (3 years ago) I wrote in blue, but I wasn't sure if rules had changed since then. Please can someone alleviate my worry that they'll look at the blue ink and SCREAM!?

Hmmm. I'm Scottish, but i'm pretty sure it didn't matter here. If there are rules then they aren't strict about it because i generally used to write with a blue pen (it was my lucky exam pen!!)

I thought you could use blue or black tbh.

Edit: Sorry is this university? I still wouldn't think it would matter, but i've yet to sit uni exams.

SCREAM///!!! XD

You have to write in Black ink  I think its a new rule. Invigilators told us that today ^^, but I personally don't think it matters really. Its not like the examiner is going to scream when they find a paper with blue ink...

Black Ink is what you have to write in. Something to do with the scanners. All exams are now scanned and sent to the examiner via email. Black ink is more clearly read by examiners.

New rules state that black (ballpoint?) pens must be used.

I think perhaps it's to do with their scanning in the exam scripts to send them electronically to examiners?
The exam boards get the scripts to the examiners by scanning them in then emailing them, so you have to write in black so it can be scanned properly (if I understand correctly)

Yep, black ink cos it scans better or something.

Re: gel pens
Might smudge in the scanner?! Too shiny? No idea. :s-smilie:
Black. Black. Black.
Biro & fountain pens both seem absolutely fine.

I think it can depend on the exam board - AQA is definitely black, but I remember last year other exam boards allowed black and blue.

Just to be safe, always use black anyway. Then you can't go wrong, really.
The JCQ rules (which you should have received a copy of and signed to say you've read and understood them) say use only black. You'll probably get away with using a blue, but you're running the risk that it won't scan properly.

Hey guys, so, in my spare time because I'm so cool I called up edexcel for the official line, and they said they will mark exams in blue. But yes, write in black. Better safe than sorry.

When i resat my exam yesterday the paper said write in blue or black ink. So i think it varies from paper to paper and probably exam board, but it should be ok. The photocopying points people were making does make sense though. Think it depends on subject and exam board. Should say at the front of paper.

Why not a gel pen??

ive no idea, i only had two gel pens with me cos i find them easier to write with, and quicker (: so i was quite dissapointed when the invijilator said no gel pens =\
The standard "answer booklets" which I believe are used by all exam boards (you have to write the examining body on it) still say "write in blue or black ink". Though my school still insist on only using black pen.
The AQA Maths Pure Core 1 exam I sat this morning says

Use black ink or black ball-point pen. Pencil should only be used for drawing.

I have the3 paper in front of me. Nothing about gel pens.
