They were like the yellow add-ons for Silver and Gold (that was Crystal) and Ruby and Sapphire (Emerald)
Emerald added an incredible amount to the game. Replaced Battle Tower with Battle Frontier. Effectively adding 7 more badges (called symbols) to the game where you had to complete specific tasks in order to win. Like beating a 50 floor pyramid without any items. Very tricky.
