I found it bad... of the three brands of anti-Ds I took Citalopram were the worst with alcohol.. I got dizzy very fast and sick after very little.

The side effects of these things can vary totally from one person to the next though, Id say test it out with a quiet night out before freshers!

is alcohol out of the question then

I've gone and lost the info leaflet for my tablets, anyone know whether it's ok to drink alcohol whilst on this medication? I have my freshers week this week..and naturally plan on getting wasted :p:

My mum takes this and can drink just fine, I'm not sure if it's different at first as I don't remember her drinking much then. But these days she goes out and socialises or drinks on weekend evenings at home and it's just like normal.

Probably worth a test run before a big night. To make sure you don't go all wonky on your new friends. Have you started it yet, then? How are you finding it?

Be careful, let someone know what you're taking and go slow I guess.

That's quite good since your doc said it might get worse before it gets better, though don't count your chickens just yet. Early days and all that.

As for the rest of it, just have to ride it out though I hate feeling dizzy. Usually makes me quite anxious.

If you drink alcohol or take St John's Wort the Citalopram will be metabolised a lot quicker than normal and therefore won't be as effective, though I presume it'd have to be in fairly large quantities for it to have a large impact.

I drank alcohol as normal on Citalopram and didn't notice any problems.

Not sure I know of any anti-depressant that a doctor will turn around and say its ok to mix with alcohol. By the very nature of the anti-depressant I would suspect its a big NO, but then it was my missus who tried 13 different types in 6 years only to get through things without them in the end.

Happy freshers regardless.

Most people take antidepressants for 6+ months. No-one could resist alcohol altogether for that time  However, the two work together so you will get drunk quicker and maybe make yourself more vulnerable. Be aware,

Freshers week? How come, are you in another country?

In my experience alcohol was fine with citalopram. The first time I drank while on it was at a festival and I over-did it BIG TIME. 24 cans a day at least. But luckily there were no side effects. The only thing I noticed was feeling slightly spaced the day after, but nothing worth stopping drinking completely.

However, it's naturally going to be different for everyone. So test it out as you said and see how you react. Also I'd recommend you stick to one drink all night just as another precaution

NYE, I was taking it.
I do feel more drunk than usual, but I have a pretty high tolerance to alcohol as it is =)

Good luck at freshers :jumphug:

Sorry, haven't read through all the replies so I could just be repeating other people.

But I'm on this medication and have been for about 4 months. And I've got drunk about twice and tipsy a few times and have been fine - well compared to when I wasn't on the meds if that makes sense... Although i do think that its made me more of a lightweight. But I would go ott every night, I don't know what affects tat would have.
Oh and on the leaflet thing it just says the normal about mixing antidepressants and alcohol!
But I suppose it does depend on the person and also what dosage are you on? BEcause I asume if your on a higher one if might affect you more..

I had a few drinks last night and I don't think it affected me any differently to how it normally would. Probably best to take it easy on the alcohol though.

hi
i dont know whether anyone will be able to help me with this
but ive recently changed my anti depressents to citalopram, and as i am a student often go out drinking!
however since i have began taking them, whilst drinking, after having not drank that much i have found myself extremely "drunk" and acting irrationally, aggresively and becoming extremely touchy and upset.
i have also no memory of being out, and have apparently been lashing out and acting like a "psycho"
has anybody else found this?
however my problem lies with one of my flat mates, whom i nearly attacked and was apparenly acting as though i was wild to, i dont know how to rectify this, as i have no memory of this night. can anyone help?
