Msc Accounting or Finance- Career Prospects????Plz help

Hi everyone. I am from india and did my B.Com(with 81.67% aggregate, was a topper in college) in 2006 after which i gave the indian civil service exams(got till the final stage but was not able to make it due to a lot of favouritism in selections). So have a 3 year education gap now.

I am now seeking to build a career in accounting and finance and have applied to Cass(City University), Lancaster, Exeter, Strathclyde and Edinburgh for Msc Accounting and Msc Finance.Which is the best university for it and will i be able to land jobs in Uk after the Msc( i m keen on pursuing ACCA or CFA as well)??

Awaiting ur replies. thanks!

Lancaster can offer you 4-5 exemptions for ACCA

Hi,

You got quite decent score in your bachelors. Which university did you go to?

You should also look at universities like LSE, Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick etc. For LSE and most of the reputed universities you'll be needing a strong GMAT score and an excellent personal statement, considering the competition at the mentioned universities.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanx for your reply buddy. I was in Panjab University, India. Strangely got rejected from City (CASS). Any other univ u could recommend to me (other than ox, cambridge). Hoping to hear from u soon!

What is your GMAT score and was your personal statement good enough? I'm asking this because I've seen many students from Cass getting rejected even when they had the required grades.

I can suggest you few other universities like Imperial College London, Kings College London.

You could then also try Bristol University, Nottingham (doing very well these days), Manchester, York, Bath, Durham etc. There are 'rankings' available which you'll find in these forums or using a simple search. Going to the top universities helps when it comes to future prospects.

Actually I haven't given GMAT till date, think my personal statement was not that bad either. I personally can't afford the BIG fee of LSE or IMPERIAL (both my parents expired few years back. I am looking for Univ. scholarships as well.. Can i get a sponsor and how??) . Anyways I have applied to the following universities:

Lancaster (Offer awaited) MSc Finance
Exeter (Result Awaited)- Msc Financial Analysis and Fund Mgmt.
Strathclyde (Unconditional Offer)
Edinburgh (Conditional offer with IELTS score),
Essex (Unconditional Offer)- MSc International Accounting
Glasgow ( Result Awaited)
Royal Holloway (Unconditional Offer)
Bristol, BAth, Reading, Birmingham, Loughborough, Westminster (Result Awaited)

Can u plz suggest which one is the best in terms of career prospects (especially for Indian students) and reputation. I checked Guardian and Times online rankings but they seem to have varied opinions.

Would appreciate your reply. thanx

In my opinion, you should think 'a bit' long term. A LSE degree on your CV means a lot. Your course selection suggests your inclination towards the finance/banking industry. I'd say that from the list you've not a single university can be categorised as best; they're all okay. Bristol/Birmingham are quite reputed though. As expected, there are exceptions. For example, you will definitely find students who graduated from the universities you mentioned working in the finance sector.

BUT, if you want to enter the finance sector with a front office job then you need a brand. In the UK the brands are LSE, LBS, Imperials, Oxford, Cambridge etc. Even Cass is quite recognised for their specialised courses. You'd also find people from all over the world who graduated from Wharton, INSEAD and so on working in the best firms. What I'm trying to suggest you is that it would be worth spending more.

For scholarships, try the British Council website. Check for local organisations who sponsor. If nothing works take a loan! I know getting a job even after your MSc from LSE is going to be tough considering the global economic slowdown. But is going to some mid rank/non-target university going to help?

thanks for yor reply buddy. Actually i want to work in the ACCOUNTING AND AUDIT industry (am planning to pursue ACCA). Want to apply for LSE but been told to give GMAT and also I was told by someone that if u qualify ACCA then your MSc degree wont matter much for the employer. From accounting industry perspective how are the universities ranked?? the same way as above or differently.

It is going to be the same even if you enter accounting and audit anyway; the same way as above. This is true for most of the fields really. From the universities listed I'd rank few of them as:

1. Bristol
2. Reading (ICMA?), Loughborough, Royal Holloway(London advantage), Bath and Birmingham are all quite decent.

Try searching the forum (from the link given in my previous post). ACCA will take few years for completion so you could also take a part time masters course which would save some money. Open a similar thread in the banking section after you've done with reading the previous ones. You'd get better response there I think.

thanx for your reply, plz suggest what about edinburgh, glasgow, strathclyde(in SCOTLAND) as they are ranked high in times online rankings for accounting and finance especially job proscpects for int. students, or should i go for some univ in/near london like Westminster or Essex or Reading...etc

I wanted to apply for LSE as well but i am yet to appear for GMAT and some one told me that now many seats are already full?

Really appreciate your time and effort....thx

Ranked high for accounting and finance jobs prospects does not mean that their students get into the best firms as these firms have target universities in their list most of the times. Going to better ranked is only going to make it easier for you to reach the interview level. If you get an interview, then its all up to you and how you impress them/make them like you and show that you deserve a place in their firm. If you want to work outside England then Edinburgh Glasgow and Strathclyde are fine.

Considering your career goals, I can only say that going to a London university will help only if it is a top ranked university like Kings College London, LSE, Cass etc No point staying in London if you are going to end up at Westminster. As well go to Bristol in that case.

Find out about deadlines for sending in applications to LSE. There is no harm in applying as I think you don't have to spend on your application and you can apply to a number of universities of your choice. If LSE are still taking applications then appearing for GMAT will be worth. If not then work this year in a relevant field, improve your finances and re-apply for 2010 intake to some top university.

Thanks for your time. Do you think it would be worth applying for MSc Accounting, Institutions and Organisations (a new course at LSE) which doesnt require a GMAT? Will it be worthy enough to do this course from LSE than doing MSc Finance from Lancaster or MSc Accounting from Birmingham????
Reply 12
Try asking the same in the LSE or IB&C forum. I can only say that MSc from LSE will be better than MSc from Lancaster or Birmingham.
