York or Exeter

I have now heard back from all my applications and have narrowed down my firm choice to either York or Exeter, both asking the same grades (AAB). I have not visited either university yet, but plan to do so within the next month.

I would be very interested in people's opinions of the Economics course and university as a whole for these two options. Is there anything that dramatically separates them?

At the moment I am swaying towards York as it has, in my opinion a nicer city, offers a Bsc, and takes a slightly shorter time to get to from London, however, I have yet to make up my mind and was hoping the your comments may help.

I don't know about Economics, but Exeter's a much nicer city  The uni is really good and the grounds are brilliant. That's my biased opinion though (I used to live near there) if you prefer York go there.
york is better so york

York any day, it is much nicer, better reputation (and better prospects), better academic and (probably) a better city

The city of York is so awesome.
york becuase its a better uni and then you can easily go into leeds :biggrin::biggrin: which is the best city in the world!

It's worth remembering that Exeter's very beautiful and closer to the city, whereas York is quite a way away from the city and quite an unattractive campus. If that matters to you, you may find York off-putting.
but then Exeter does have that "rah" reputation.
Subject wise I'm afraid I'm not qualified to help!

I guess there IS the issue of York campus being a concrete landscape.

I'd go to York-Exeter is one of the most expensive places to study outside of London, which is what is putting me off, personally! :s-smilie:

York. It's a larger department, they offer more modules and more choice, and have a stronger economics department. The nice thing about Exeter is that it's in the south, otherwise York is better (IMO) on all fronts.

York campus isn't THAT far away, literally 15 mins brisk walk, and there are always buses! Yeh the campus isn't that great looking, but nor is exeter's.
OK I'm at York and have never visited Exeter and have an economist house mate.

Your point about travel time is important. Anything over 2-3 hours and you can forget going home for the occasional weekend of recuperation (it just won't be worth the effort).

The campus at York can seem a 1960's concrete nightmare but the lake and ducks do take the edge off it when you're here. The city itself is beautiful and stuffed full of interesting bars, pubs, individual shops. Accommodation is also relatively cheap compared to many uni cities.

York is still a Top 10 uni in most guides and more importantly in the perceptions of graduate recruiters. Finance and top law firms actively recruit here (may be true for Exeter too).

When you visit, get a feel for the department, uni and city. Your gut feel will guide you as to what is right for you.

Good luck

I am surprised Extere made you an AAB offer i.e. "everyone" else seems to have AAA. So is it straight economics?

Yes York has a better rep for econ (although Exeter is on the up). However you should consider geog factors (e.g. 2 hour rule) and if the uni has a campus or not..

Hi guys,

just wanted to get this thread going again because i may be in a similar situation in the near future. i'm applying for straight economics at both unis and they are both my top choices, how would you feel about economics at either of these unis now?

Talk about raising a thread from the dead!

Truth be told, I would now rate the Exeter programme slightly above York's, but in all honesty, they are much of a muchness. Personally I'd probably choose Exeter based on the southern location and warmer climate.

York, however, offers more economic history modules, which is maybe something that appeals to you. Also I feel they offer more relevant empirical finance and asset pricing modules, which personally I'd prefer.

Although Exeter does pride itself on offering the option to study abroad between second and third year, which is something you may want to look into.

Haha! Yeah i know right :L Exeter don't actually offer a BSc, they only offer a BA aswell, which may just work in my favour since I don't really want to do a heavily maths based economics course.

Exeter does have the year in industry/abroad option, I also have found that York give you the option to study abroad for a year now too. It's a tricky one IMO, I havent even got an offer from York so I guess I'd have to wait and see what happens before deciding!

Exeter's course is now as mathematical as York's despite the BA classification. I think Exeter's first year maths module is actually more technically advanced than York's which never used to be true.
Anyone else?

I now have an offer from both York and Exeter both at AAB! Any more comments?
bumping this thread, would be nice to hear opinions now ion 2018. I have BSc Economics offers (AAB) from both of these unis and it would be great to hear the pros and cons of each place (campus, but more specifically course quality and prospects).
Cheers
