Ok, so heres my story (Im a newbie so bear with me )... I applied to Brasenose for classics and got my interviews there, and kinda mucked them up, but I was given St Hilda's as my second choice. and so had interviews there too. I really liked the tutors and got on well with everyone i met, adn so i was very happy when i got my offer from hildas. i went down to the hildas open day in february too and really liked the place - but the only thing is im still not completely sure about the whole single sex college thing - are they all loners down there cos noone goes? and is their reputation really that bad?
on another note - any fellow classicists starting in 2005? havent noticed anyone else for classics, but i could just be being dim (sadly it happens, you know...) also any jazz musicians there? im a clarinettist and play mostly trad jazz but im open to most things. havin an erroll garner phase at the mo.

thats all for now i think!
am doing classics at new next year (grades permitting). all i know about st hilda's is that my teacher's wife is the ancient history fellow there, and she's pretty nice, as well as pretty short ;p 2 people from new got pooled there i think, too (though one was differed entry i think), so i don't doubt that you'll have lots of normal people around
There are lots of relevant threads on this forum regarding Hilda's and your concerns. Best thing to do is do a search for them, and then always add your comment's on the end.
was just wondering as every one i could find had been about whether only lesbians went to st hildas - must admit was not the most heartening thing to find!

Well, Oxford seems to be a little light on jazz compared with Cambridge (where numerous pubs have jazz sessions) but ther is some - http://users.ox.ac.uk/~jazzsoc for a start!
teamvillage on this forum used to play a lot of jazz 'bone, but is probably too busy with his boy-band these days.

Not really. I know some Hildabeasts that are fantastic socialites out of college. At least half my friends are out of college, and much of my social life, even being a first year. Being in an all girls college won't make you a loner. If may, in forcing you to socialise out of college, mean you have a far better social life than many people who don't have that need, so stay in college. Hilda's seems like one of the least insular colleges, because of the single sex status.

I used to play for Somerville's Jazz band, but I can't make Monday nights anymore. Many colleges have their own band, and there's the Donut Kings who are quite accomplished. It's not much worse than the Cambridge jazz scene, while the college bands aren't quite up to Fitz or Selwyn bands, some are pretty good.
Hi, I'm going into St. Hilda's too, for English and if it makes you feel any better I'm not a lesbian or anyone hildas cliche. I was worried about it too, but I spoke to a few people about it and realised its not going to be a problem because its a university, not just a college, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get to know other people. ALso, everyone will be having doubts as there are so many people pooled there, so really don't worry about it.
I'm at Hilda's so experiencing it all first-hand. I'm glad you enjoyed the Open Day - that's what it's there for. I was pooled too and was apprehensive about the whole single-sex issue because I'd been at an all-girls school since the age of 4
Because so many people are pooled to Hilda's, a lot are apprehensive about it being all-girls. So you'll find friends who are just as willing to go out as you. And although you occasionally may wish the college was mixed...I have...you get to see the plus points of it being all-girls too.
And for the record....no, we are not all lesbians. You do not magically become transformed either into a sex-starved man-hunter (hildabeast ) or a lesbian during Freshers Week. We do not stay in our rooms - in fact as Will (Drogue) said, the single-sex status means you might feel more need to socialise out of college. I play university hockey (not Blues standard though ) and have met lots of people outside of college this way. You might have to work slightly harder initially to meet boys and become friends with them, but it's not that hard.
You can PM me if you have anymore questions. I know a few classicists too, so any questions about the course, I'll see if I can find out for you.

Oxford is really impressive for Jazz, though I've only just noticed to be honest. Freuds has some jazz or blues most nights from 11pm-1am. Thursdays you can choose between the jazzsoc jam at the City Tavern, or professional gigs at the Wheatsheaf. Many other pubs put on gigs in addition to this, such as the Chester Arms, the Bullingdon, and even on occasion the Turf! Cafe Rouge often has stuff on too.
The Daily info usually covers most, if not all of it...
Are there no jazzers out there on the Student Room? I'd quite like to start up a trad jazz band if there aren't any around - drums, acc guitar, trumpet, bass, piano, clarinet, maybe trombone? depends on who might be interested I suppose. Is the jazz in Oxford mainly new stuff - the avant garde? *cringes* OK, so that sounds really pretentious, but you know what I mean.
What do you play? I'm a clarinet. Well, not literally, that would just be odd. Would explain how I got an offer though - Oxford can't be seen to discriminate against musical instrument applicants...

From what I've seen it's more "mainstream" than trad... am yet to see a decent trad/dixie band. Not alot of avant garde though don't worry!
Not thought about the big bands? OUJO are a bit modern and "cutting edge" but the Donut Kings to everything from swing to funk and are very good!
Blimmin' hell, not even joined them yet, and already plugging them to hell!

Hilda's is actually a really nice college there are really mad people there who go out all the time and there are people who stay in and do their just like at other colleges, and contrary to popular belief not everyone there is a lesbian in fact far less then people would imagine. There are lots of oppurtunties to meet guys but Hilda's is very friendly and i'm sure that all you guys who have offers from there will get over the single-sex thing, yes it is an issue for freshers week when everyone is obsessed with what college you are at, but after that you just get into college life, and it really isn't a big deal definately don't let it put you off going to Oxford you'll love it here and you'll regret missing the oppurtunity!
the grounds that hilda have are apparently cool also,
PK
Yeah, when I went to the Open Day in February I was amazed by them - from the outside the college doesn't look like it's going to be very pretty but it really is! And they have ducks and geese, woo! AND they have free punts, what more could you want!
PS is it true that putning in Cambridge is different from punting in Oxford? Something to do with standing at the front or back I think.....?

Yes! Its crazy but true, something to do with standing in a different place. Last time I went my mum got really offended cos someone said she was doing it wrong, and she said 'actually, this is how its done in Oxford'!

I thought so! Me and a friend, who is going to Trinity Cambridge next year, are going to have falling off punt races, woo!
